Hailey Bieber is candidly discussing the complexities of motherhood following the birth of her son, Jack Blues. Just months after the arrival of her child, the model revealed that she was diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition that has introduced her to a new emotional landscape, marked by heightened feelings in the days leading up to her menstrual cycle.

In a recent interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Bieber, 29, opened up about the significant impact her experience of motherhood has had on her perspective towards women’s health. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed a newfound interest in understanding the myriad physical and emotional changes that accompany pregnancy and postpartum life. “Becoming a mother has been a really intense and special journey,” she remarked. “There’s so much that happens when you are pregnant, during childbirth, and even after.”
Bieber revealed that her challenges with PMDD arose after welcoming Jack into the world. This condition, which is often marked by severe mood changes, irritability, anxiety, and depression in the weeks leading up to menstruation, has drawn her attention to the brevity of discussions and research surrounding women’s health issues. She stated, “After I had my son, I struggled with that a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it.”

The model has been proactive in sharing her own experiences, believing that open dialogue can provide solace to others facing similar challenges. “Conversation, for me personally, makes me feel less alone,” she affirmed. “When we can identify with each other and talk about our struggles, it certainly makes the journey feel less isolating.”

This isn’t Bieber’s first revelation regarding her diagnosis. Earlier this year, she spoke about her PMDD experience during an appearance on the SHE MD podcast, noting that although she had encountered premenstrual syndrome (PMS) prior to her pregnancy, the emotional fallout post-birth felt markedly different. “The lead-up to getting your period felt way more intense than before,” she described. “You think, ‘Why does it feel like my whole entire life is gonna end? I don’t understand.’”
She explained how the torrential emotions she faced would dissipate with the arrival of her period, highlighting the somewhat cyclical nature of PMDD. However, Bieber mentioned that over time, her symptoms began to improve, offering her a glimpse of hope amid the upheaval.
Despite the difficulties presented by PMDD, Bieber maintains that motherhood has been a profoundly rewarding experience. She and her husband, Justin Bieber, welcomed Jack on August 22, 2024, and she has previously shared her joy in embracing this new chapter. “It is so fun. I always knew I wanted kids; I always wanted to be a mum,” she said during her appearance on the Therapuss podcast.
The couple appears to be considering further additions to their family, albeit without any rush. “I definitely do want one more,” Bieber mentioned, adding, “I’m not in a rush, but I definitely want one more. Maybe I’ll have four more, maybe I’ll have three. I don’t know. I’m just taking it one day at a time.”
Bieber’s willingness to share her struggles adds an important voice to a discourse often shrouded in silence. By articulating her experiences with PMDD, she hopes to foster a greater understanding among women who may be undergoing similar challenges, thus contributing to a more supportive community around motherhood and women’s health.
As more individuals share their narratives, the hope is for an increased acknowledgement of issues surrounding women’s mental and emotional health, promoting a culture that encourages both awareness and support.
