The incident occurred at a residence in the University Hill neighbourhood, close to the university campus. According to a statement from the Boulder Police Department, officers were alerted to the scene just before 11:30 p.m. after reports of a shooting emerged. Upon their arrival, police discovered two students suffering from gunshot wounds; both were swiftly transported to hospital. Tragically, one of the victims, identified as 19-year-old Luca Hanlon, succumbed to his injuries early the following morning.

Authorities indicated that a sibling of Perez recognised him from photos circulating after the shooting, which aided in his subsequent arrest. The Boulder County Coroner confirmed Hanlon as the deceased victim of this unfortunate event.

Earlier that evening, police had visited the same residence in relation to a noise complaint regarding a large gathering at the property. Officers issued citations to the occupants for hosting what was deemed a nuisance party. Following police intervention, the gathering dispersed with only a small group remaining inside.
Detectives believe that tensions escalated when a group of individuals attempted to force their way into the property after the initial disturbance. Shortly thereafter, gunfire erupted within the home, striking the two students. The assailants fled the scene, and police are continuing to investigate potential charges against other individuals who may have been involved; however, they have stated that they believe Perez acted alone as the shooter.
In another worrying development, the other victim of the shooting remains in hospital, with the specifics of their condition yet to be disclosed.
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn addressed the community in light of these events, expressing a desire for safety to be restored. “Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe, and while I hope this arrest restores some measure of safety, I know it will never bring back the life of this young man or undo all the trauma victims have gone through,” he said.
As the investigation continues, the police urge anyone with information related to the shooting or the events leading up to it to come forward. The tragic loss of a young life has shaken the University of Colorado-Boulder community, prompting discussions around safety and the responsibilities associated with hosting gatherings.
With Perez currently in custody, authorities are working diligently to piece together the circumstances of that fateful evening. The ongoing inquiry will seek to ensure justice for the victims and provide closure to an affected community grappling with this senseless act of violence. Further updates are expected as police continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews as part of their investigation.
The University of Colorado-Boulder has yet to release a formal statement regarding the incident but is likely to address the matter in the wake of such profound tragedy. In an atmosphere increasingly marked by concerns over safety at social events, this incident raises urgent questions about violence and its impact on college communities nationwide.
As investigators sift through the details, the hope remains for healing amongst friends and family who mourn a promising life cut short and for those recovering from the implications of this distressing event.
