In a tragic incident in Ocala, Florida, a man stands accused of fatally shooting his two roommates following a dispute that allegedly stemmed from an argument over ice cream. The Ocala Police Chief, Mike Balken, labelled the events leading to the shootings as “a ridiculous situation.”

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 28, officers responded to a call about a verbal altercation at a shared residence on SE 8th Street. The confrontation involved three individuals: the homeowner, identified as 69-year-old Mark Robinson, and his two tenants, aged 69 and 78. Chief Balken stated that the officers’ initial assessment found the disagreement centred around someone consuming another’s ice cream.

At the scene, police found no evidence of crime, and the situation appeared to have calmed down, leading officers to leave the premises. Following police departure, the two tenants went for a walk. However, within an hour, the police received another emergency call indicating that shots had been fired at the same location.

Upon returning to the house, officers discovered one tenant’s body in the front yard and the other’s inside the property. Tragically, both men succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter. Robinson, who remained at the scene, surrendered to the police and reportedly admitted to shooting both men.
During questioning, Robinson claimed he fired in self-defence. He asserted that after the initial police visit, he felt the atmosphere might worsen upon his roommates’ return, leading him to arm himself with a 12-gauge shotgun. Robinson alleged that the dispute reignited when the two men returned home, with one reportedly brandishing a knife, which prompted him to feel threatened.
In a shocking turn, one of the tenants attempted to run away, but Robinson allegedly shot him in the back as he fled. Chief Balken indicated that evidence from the scene suggested that the fleeing man may not have posed a threat at the time of the shooting, and witness accounts corroborated a different version of events than Robinson’s self-defence claim.
Chief Balken confirmed that Robinson has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, with potential for additional charges pending further investigation. Authorities are considering whether the circumstances warrant charges related to the second fatality as well. A knife was reportedly recovered from the scene, adding complexity to the case.
Describing the living situation between the individuals involved, Balken noted that it was “dysfunctional.” He characterised Robinson as “an angry old man” who may have struggled with alcohol-related issues, suggesting that these factors might have contributed to the deadly encounter.
Mark Robinson remains in custody and is scheduled for his next court appearance on December 1. As the investigation continues, police are working alongside prosecutors to determine the appropriate charges based on the gathered evidence and statements.
This incident has shocked the local community, raising concerns about the dynamics of shared living arrangements and the impact of seemingly trivial disagreements spiralling out of control. As further details emerge, residents are left grappling with the tragic consequences of a disagreement that started over something as innocuous as ice cream.
