The events leading to the shooting unfolded on Saturday night in the International District of Albuquerque. According to reports, Gomez-Villeda approached her neighbours, 16-year-old Keinerlein Rangel and her mother, to request that they lower the volume of the music they were playing while unpacking boxes in their apartment. When her request went unheeded, Gomez-Villeda returned to confront them once more, leading to a physical altercation.

During this scuffle, it is alleged that Gomez-Villeda instructed her son to go inside their apartment and retrieve her handgun. The boy complied and emerged with the firearm. Tragically, he fired a single round that struck Rangel, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Gomez-Villeda reportedly hurried her son back into their apartment and sent a message to her husband, saying, “I’m probably going to jail right now,” before dialling emergency services. The father of the deceased teenager arrived shortly thereafter, only to find his daughter unresponsive. It is reported that he attempted to break into Gomez-Villeda’s apartment upon learning of what had occurred, prompting Gomez-Villeda to fire a warning shot in an attempt to deter him.
Albuquerque Police Chief Cecily Barker addressed the media, detailing how the situation escalated and explaining the critical moment when the young boy attempted to intervene in the altercation. Shortly after officers arrived at the scene, they heard the sound of a gunshot emanating from the apartment. Gomez-Villeda was later seen exiting with the firearm in her possession. Police reported that one of the officers discharged their weapon towards her, although there were no injuries resulting from this action.
Currently, Elaina Gomez-Villeda is being held without bail at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Centre. She faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, child abuse, conspiracy to commit a felony, battery, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of stolen property in relation to the handgun reportedly used in the shooting.
Authorities are still deliberating whether to file charges against the 10-year-old boy involved in the tragic incident, as legal considerations regarding his age complicate the situation. The local district attorney’s office is navigating this delicate matter, weighing options and preparing for potential actions moving forward.
As this investigation continues, the local community is mourning the loss of a young life while grappling with the implications of such a tragic occurrence. The case underscores critical issues concerning gun safety, parental responsibility, and the management of disputes in residential areas.
The Albuquerque Police Department is expected to provide further updates as they delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and assess the resultant legal ramifications for those involved in this heartbreaking case.
