Aimee Morrisby, a 36-year-old wellness coach and author from Australia, faced the heartbreaking reality that her dream of having biological children may never be realised. Born with a rare congenital condition known as long-segment Hirschsprung’s disease, her medical history was fraught with complications that left her unable to safely conceive. However, a remarkable turn of events offered her a glimmer of hope when her younger sister, Shayna, volunteered to act as a surrogate.

Hirschsprung’s disease is a disorder that affects the nerves responsible for moving waste through the intestines, requiring Aimee to undergo numerous surgeries throughout her life. As a result, she now has approximately two feet of her small intestine remaining, a significant reduction when compared to the average adult whose small intestine measures around 20 feet.

Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Aimee and her husband, Jake, initially held onto the hope of starting a family of their own. However, consultations with medical specialists soon revealed that Aimee’s reproductive health mirrored that of someone far older. In 2014, an attempt by a colorectal surgeon to reposition her stoma for potential pregnancy ended in disappointment when it was discovered that her uterus was too severely damaged.
Reflecting on the moment she learned that pregnancy could be life-threatening, Aimee described the emotional turmoil she experienced: “I physically felt my heart break,” she said. The couple ultimately reconciled with the idea that biological children might not be in their future.
Life took an unexpected turn when Shayna reached out one evening with an extraordinary offer. “Do you want to have a baby?” she asked, proposing to be Aimee and Jake’s surrogate. This prompt led the couple to move back to their hometown to be closer to Shayna. In a beautiful act of love, Shayna delivered a healthy baby girl, Francesca, who is now 10 years old.
In the face of potential jealousy, Aimee revealed a very different sentiment. “Mostly, I felt relief,” she said. The pregnancy grew to be a shared experience, strengthening the bond between the sisters. They shared cherished moments, from messaging late into the night to treat themselves to chocolate ice cream after frequent medical appointments.
However, the happiness of welcoming Francesca into the world did not come without its challenges. Due to Australian surrogacy laws, Shayna was initially recognised as the legal mother. Consequently, Aimee and Jake embarked on a lengthy and complex legal journey involving court proceedings and medical assessments to secure legal parentage for their biological daughter. Nevertheless, Aimee felt these hurdles were insignificant compared to the joy of motherhood.
When doctors confirmed that Francesca had not inherited Hirschsprung’s disease, Aimee felt a wave of emotion wash over her. Her own condition was identified shortly after her birth when she failed to pass meconium, the newborn’s first stool. Francesca, however, displayed none of the associated symptoms.
“Everything we’d been through led to that moment,” Aimee reflected, highlighting the trials she endured before achieving her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. Now an inquisitive and vibrant 10-year-old, Francesca is aware of the special role her aunty played in her life. “She knows she grew in her aunty’s tummy, and she carries her aunty’s name as her middle name,” Aimee explained.
In addition to her role as a mother, Aimee has turned her experiences into a powerful narrative. She is set to release a memoir titled *Still Here*, which details her journey with Hirschsprung’s disease and the path to motherhood. The book is scheduled for publication on 21 November and is currently available for pre-order on her website.
Aimee Morrisby’s story is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the profound connections of family. Through her sister’s selfless act, she not only fulfilled her dream of motherhood but underscored the power of love and sacrifice in overcoming life’s most severe challenges.
