The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) reported that officers were dispatched to the area around 7:50 p.m. local time, following numerous calls concerning “multiple gunshot victims.” Upon arrival, police secured the scene in the 400 block of Grayment Avenue, allowing Birmingham Fire Rescue to assist the injured.

According to BPD officer Darrell Freeman, the shooting left nine individuals with gunshot wounds. Among those injured, one person was confirmed dead, another remained in a critical condition, while seven others were reported to be stable. The identity of the deceased and the injured victims has not yet been disclosed to the public.

Police have since detained a suspect in relation to the incident and have taken them to the Birmingham Police Headquarters for further questioning. Authorities confirmed the recovery of multiple firearms from the shooting scene; however, they could not establish a definitive motive for the violence.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett addressed the media, indicating that the incident appeared to involve two separate parties. He described the occurrences as “two senseless acts of violence” and expressed concern for the victims and their families. Chief Pickett noted his gratitude that the incident did not result in further casualties, especially given the large number of spectators and families present for the game. “I’m very grateful that our officers who were running in the direction of the gunfire… none of us were injured,” he added.
The shooting transpired after the game had concluded, which may have mitigated the scale of potential injuries. It occurred outside Legion Field, the traditional venue for the Magic City Classic, highlighting the heightened need for security at large public events.
The BPD is actively encouraging anyone with footage or information related to the incident to come forward. Individuals who may possess video evidence are asked to contact the detective at 205-254-1764.
