A new elementary school in Texas is set to honour a dedicated custodian whose commitment to her students has left an enduring legacy within her community. Marilyn Hampton, a former custodian for the Aubrey Independent School District (ISD), has had a significant impact on the lives of countless students during her 39 years of service. The announcement of the school’s naming took place during a school board meeting on 21st October and was a surprise that brought Hampton to tears.

The unfolding of the heartwarming event began when 76-year-old Hampton was asked to roll out a red carpet, a task she had performed multiple times throughout her career. However, this occasion was notably different. As she unveiled the carpet, it became clear that it displayed the name of the district’s latest educational institution: Marilyn Hampton Elementary. “Oh my goodness,” she exclaimed in disbelief as the surprise hit her. “Oh, God. You all are the best.”

The outpouring of love and gratitude during the meeting was palpable, reflecting the admiration held for Hampton by parents, staff, and students alike. Upon her retirement in 2022, Hampton reflected on the honour, stating, “I still can’t believe it. I haven’t stopped crying.” Her emotions spoke volumes about the immense pride and joy she felt from this recognition.
Throughout her extensive career, Hampton was known for her willingness to go beyond the expectations of her role. Superintendent Shannon Saylor highlighted her exceptional efforts to support students, which included personally purchasing and delivering school supplies to those in need. Additionally, she assisted students in their academic preparation, demonstrating a commitment to education that surpassed traditional custodial responsibilities.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Saylor described Hampton as an individual that truly exemplifies devotion and kindness. “Her impact on generations of students, staff, and families is immeasurable,” Saylor noted. He went on to call her “a teacher without a degree, an educator without a classroom, and a mentor without a formal title,” recognising that her influence reached deeply into the lives of those she interacted with.
The recognition she has received is particularly poignant considering Hampton’s own background. As one of eight siblings, she was the only one in her family to attain a high school diploma. This achievement initially left her feeling that she had fallen short in terms of higher education, but over time, she began to understand her value and the meaningful contributions she has made within her community. “I just thought, ‘You know, Marilyn? God put you where you are supposed to be.’ And I’m very happy with the way things turned out,” she reflected.
Though officially retired, Hampton remains active in her community by spending time with young children at the Aubrey ISD’s Early Bird Learning Center. Her zest for nurturing and educating young minds has not waned, as she continues to engage with students and families, reinforcing the bonds she has formed over nearly four decades.
The new school, which will be the fifth elementary campus in the Aubrey ISD, is scheduled to open its doors in August 2027. The decision to name the facility after Hampton speaks volumes about the values that the district cherishes—compassion, dedication, and the transformative power of a supportive educator.
Marilyn Hampton’s story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that individuals can have in educational settings, often without formal titles or recognition. Her legacy as a beloved figure in the Aubrey community will now live on in the name of a school, ensuring that future generations will hear the story of her kindness and service, inspiring them to carry forth her spirit of generosity and commitment.
