A significant safety alert has been issued concerning Once Upon a Farm’s Tractor Wheels Organic Toddler Soft-Baked Bars, as the company has announced a voluntary recall due to a serious choking hazard. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged consumers to immediately dispose of these products following reports of choking incidents involving young children, some of which necessitated hospitalisation.

The Berkeley, California-based company revealed the recall on 30th October, affecting all varieties of the snack bar aimed at toddlers aged between 18 months and 30 months. The FDA’s announcement highlighted alarming cases of toddlers experiencing “complete airway obstruction,” leading to severe respiratory distress after consuming the bars.
According to the FDA, the product, when chewed, creates a dry and sticky mass that could resist standard choking interventions, such as back blows and the Heimlich manoeuvre. Some young children have experienced suffocation so severe that emergency medical responses were required. The agency emphasised the seriousness of these incidents, confirming that some cases necessitated immediate hospital observation.

The recall encompasses three specific flavours of the Tractor Wheels bars: Apple, Sweet Potato & Spinach; Strawberry, Pumpkin & Beet; and Banana, Pumpkin & Cauliflower. Package designs feature colourful imagery of fruits and vegetables, catering to a toddler’s appeal while underlining the brand’s commitment to healthy snacks.
The bars were sold at various retailers across the nation, including large chains like Walmart, Target, and Costco. In light of the ongoing concerns regarding consumer safety, the FDA has firmly directed parents and guardians not to purchase or serve any flavour of the affected snack bars. Instead, they have advised that any remaining products be discarded immediately.
In the event that any child has consumed the bars and exhibited adverse symptoms, the FDA encourages parents to seek medical advice promptly. They are urged to consult healthcare providers to report symptoms and ensure that children receive necessary care.
Once Upon a Farm has stated its commitment to customer safety and quality amidst this crisis. In a public statement, the company expressed its concern, noting, “We acted out of an abundance of caution, in the best interest of our customers and our commitment to quality.” It acknowledged that the recall was initiated in response to the FDA’s notifications regarding the choking incidents and confirmed that they are collaborating with the agency to ensure the swift removal of affected products from shelves.
The company further articulated its responsibility to families, recognising the trust that parents place in their products. “We fell short of that, and that is why we are taking these aggressive actions,” the statement read, indicating an awareness of the seriousness of the situation and the need for transparency with consumers.
As the agency continues its investigation, the FDA has reiterated to consumers the importance of remaining vigilant about the potential dangers of certain food products, especially those marketed towards young children. Families are being reminded to always supervise toddlers while eating, highlighting the ongoing significance of food safety and consumer awareness.
The situation serves as a crucial reminder for both manufacturers and consumers about the imperative need for thorough safety checks and protocols, particularly regarding products designed for vulnerable age groups. As further developments arise, once more, parents are encouraged to stay informed and act with caution.
