San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is using his platform to promote wellness and encourage conversations around prostate cancer screenings. At the age of 33, Kittle has partnered with pharmaceutical company Novartis to raise awareness about the disease that affects one in eight men during their lifetime. His motivation stems from a personal family experience, including the loss of his grandfather, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer a decade ago.

In an exclusive interview, Kittle revealed how his family’s journey with prostate cancer impacted his outlook. His grandfather, who passed away from natural causes last year, prompted Kittle to have a heart-to-heart with his father, Bruce, which ultimately ignited the football star’s desire to educate himself about prostate health. “Initially, I had zero awareness. I just thought of prostate cancer as a term—I didn’t know much beyond that,” he admitted.

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among men in the United States, excluding skin cancer, and Kittle hopes to change the perception that screening tests are intimidating. “If detected early, the five-year relative survival rate exceeds 99%,” he emphasised, quoting data from Novartis. He noted that the first step towards early detection involves having a discussion with a healthcare provider, followed by a simple blood test. “It’s not scary, it’s straightforward,” he explained.
Kittle encouraged others, particularly men, to cease delaying health conversations. “Relax. It’s a blood test. Trust me, I get IVs, blood draws, and acupuncture. You can handle one little prick; it can save your life and potentially those of your friends or family,” he urged. He was quick to add, “I’m not a doctor, but you owe it to yourself to talk to one about your health.”
Having returned to action last month following a serious Achilles injury during the playoffs in January, Kittle attributed part of his successful comeback to a positive mindset. “I believe in approaching everything with a violently positive mindset,” he remarked optimistically. “No matter what challenges you face, it’s important to confront them head-on.”
In the context of his recovery, Kittle expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his wife, Claire, and his family. “I’m fortunate; I’ve got a great support system, including fantastic doctors and rehab specialists. That gives me confidence as I navigate my recovery,” he said, adding that positivity can enhance one’s resilience.
During the current NFL season, Kittle has demonstrated his prowess on the field with impressive statistics, making 34 receptions for 425 yards and scoring five touchdowns so far. This displays that he has not only returned to form but is excelling in his performance despite his recent injury challenges.
As the season progresses, the 49ers stand proudly at the top of the NFC West with a record of 6-1. Kittle and his teammates are gearing up for their upcoming match against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 8th. Through his efforts both on and off the field, Kittle continues to make a meaningful impact within the community, driving awareness and advocacy for men’s health issues.
