A serious incident at Wildpark Johannismühle, a wildlife park located approximately 45 miles south of Berlin, has prompted an investigation by local authorities after an eight-year-old girl sustained significant injuries in a wolf attack. The event occurred on Wednesday, 28 October, during a special zookeeper activity designed for children, prior to the park’s official opening hours.
Reports indicate that the incident unfolded around 9 am when a staff member was giving water to the wolves in their enclosure. The girl was attacked by at least one of the wolves, resulting in severe injuries that necessitated a rescue helicopter to airlift her to a nearby hospital. While specific details regarding her current condition remain undisclosed, local media outlet Bild has stated that she suffered serious head injuries.

In the aftermath of the attack, officials have confirmed that the zookeeper’s prompt response helped avert further injury, particularly to two other children present at the scene. Following the event, emotional support was provided to four individuals, including three children, by chaplains.

In response to the incident, Wildpark Johannismühle has closed its doors to the public, with operations suspended until at least 2 November. The park is home to both Arctic and grey wolves, and the closure aims to allow for a thorough investigation and ensure the safety of visitors.
The Brandenburg Police have since launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the attack. A staff member who was present when the incident occurred is currently under investigation, facing allegations of negligent bodily harm. Authorities have stated that a report will be submitted to the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the Veterinary and Food Inspection Office as part of their examination into the matter.
Officials from the Veterinary and Food Inspection Office plan to visit the wildlife park for an on-site inspection to assess compliance with animal welfare regulations. They will evaluate the conditions within the park, as well as the health and behaviour of the wolves involved in the incident, to inform any future decisions regarding the facility’s operations.
At this time, there is insufficient professional assessment available regarding the health and behaviour of the wolves linked to the attack. Investigators have stressed that further examinations will be necessary to ascertain the full circumstances of the incident.
The local community has been shaken by the event, and officials are offering support to those affected. Wildpark Johannismühle has yet to make a statement regarding the incident, while the Brandenburg Police have confirmed their ongoing investigation.
As this investigation unfolds, the wellbeing of both the young victim and the animals involved remains a priority. The incident highlights the importance of stringent safety measures in wildlife parks, particularly during interactive events aimed at young visitors.
