At just 17 years old, Natalia Benitez has transitioned from a quiet and reserved student to a vibrant ambassador for the mentorship organisation Step Up, which supports young girls in finding their potential. Benitez has been recognised as Step Up’s 2026 Teen Honoree, a title that celebrates her commitment to empowering her peers.
Benitez’s journey began when her family relocated from a predominantly Hispanic neighbourhood to a more diverse area in Los Angeles. The move proved challenging, as she initially felt a sense of disconnection from her new surroundings. However, drawing inspiration from her hardworking immigrant parents, she sought opportunities to engage with her community. She began attending the Boys & Girls Club, where she participated in free sports, field trips, and various activities that helped her connect with others.

As she entered high school, however, Benitez found herself grappling with shyness once again. The pressures of being an underclassman dimmed her voice, leaving her hesitant to express herself. This all changed when she discovered Step Up, a nonprofit focused on mentoring girls. Through this programme, Benitez was able to forge connections with older students, allowing her to rediscover her confidence.

“I started talking to a lot of the older girls, and just seeing how cool and chill they were, it really opened me up,” Benitez recalls. Her newfound perspective gave her the confidence to embrace her voice, leading her to become an active participant in the programme.
Today, as a senior in high school, Benitez has taken on the role of student ambassador for Step Up. She is dedicated to encouraging other girls to develop self-esteem and a strong sense of identity. Her hard work and dedication to this mission have not gone unnoticed, culminating in her selection as the 2026 Teen Honoree.
Upon learning of her honour, Benitez felt both surprised and validated. “It was just such a shock when I found out,” she admitted. “I guess I really do make a difference, and I really matter in the programme.” This recognition granted her the opportunity to address an audience at the renowned Step Up Inspiration Awards, alongside celebrities like Demi Moore, Becky G, and Ali Larter. The event successfully raised an impressive £800,000 for mentorship programmes.
Before her moment on stage, Benitez had little experience with public speaking, usually limited to reading prayers at her church. However, thanks to the guidance of her mentor, Myra, she was able to prepare for this significant occasion. In her speech, she expressed her desire for other participants to recognise their inherent worth, conveying the message that they belong simply by existing.
Representing her peers, especially girls from similar backgrounds, was particularly meaningful to Benitez. “I am an example of these girls,” she stated. “I represent my school. I represent so many girls who are so alike to me, and it’s just such an honour to receive this award.”
Now poised to embark on a new chapter in her life, Benitez is focused on applying to colleges with aspirations of becoming a speech-language pathologist, a career path she discovered while involved with Step Up. “Step Up really introduced me to the future I wanted,” she explained. Her engagement with the programme ignited her motivation to explore career options, inspiring her to work with children and support the community.
In addition to pursuing her studies, she is eager to continue her mentorship role, introducing younger students to resources and opportunities they may otherwise miss. “I definitely want to work a lot more with the youth,” Benitez affirmed. She has aspirations of getting involved with UNICEF, believing that firsthand support for local communities is essential.
Reflecting on her journey, Benitez credits Step Up for helping her develop the self-confidence she once lacked. “I was still that shy kid, and it felt like nothing had changed,” she noted. “And then Step Up really got me out of that bubble.” This transformation has allowed her to connect with numerous people at school and grow into a more outgoing individual.
When considering the changes in herself, she acknowledges that her younger self would hardly recognise the person she has become. Benitez hopes that other girls can embark on their own journeys of self-discovery and growth through similar opportunities. “Once you really get to know yourself, you really get to know what you’re interested in and how you want to impact those around you,” she suggested.
As she looks to the future, Natalia Benitez embodies the values of perseverance and self-belief, serving as an inspiring role model for young girls in her community. Her story demonstrates the transformative power of mentorship and the positive ripple effect it can have on the lives of others.
