The Waveny estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, once the childhood home of actor Christopher Lloyd, has been transformed into a public park that attracts over 250,000 visitors each year. Lloyd, famously known for his role in the “Back to the Future” series, reflected on his upbringing at the expansive, 400-acre estate in a recent interview published by The Wall Street Journal.

Lloyd moved to Waveny at the tender age of six, accompanied by his six older siblings. The estate, which was previously owned by his family, was an embodiment of opulence, greatly influenced by the landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted’s sons, who are credited with designing parts of New York City’s Central Park. Those initial surroundings left a profound impression on the young actor, who recalled being captivated by the grandeur of his family home.

The source of the family’s wealth can be traced back to Lloyd’s maternal grandfather, Lewis Henry Lapham, who played a significant role in the establishment of Texaco Oil Company in 1902. Growing up in such a lavish environment, Lloyd found himself mesmerised by the artistic gatherings that his mother, a singer, would host. He reminisced about how she organised recitals and increasingly elaborate soirées, describing the frequent appearances of “strange, talented people” that sparked his own interest in the performing arts.
However, family dynamics shifted when Lloyd’s parents divorced during his teenage years. He spent a portion of his youth at a boarding school in upstate New York, which he eventually left to attend a public school in Westport, Connecticut. It was there that he began to cultivate a passion for acting, landing his first significant role in a school production of “Charley’s Aunt.”
Lloyd’s journey into the world of acting accelerated as he gained practical experience through apprenticeships at various theatres in New York and Massachusetts. His resolve to pursue a career in the arts led him to audition for the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, from which he graduated in 1957.
Currently, Lloyd resides with his wife, Lisa, in a contemporary hacienda along the Californian coast in Montecito. The couple previously lived in a different property that was tragically lost in the wildfires of 2008; they have since chosen a location closer to town, allowing them to feel more connected to the community.
The Waveny estate, once a personal haven for Lloyd, saw a significant change in 1967 when it was purchased by the city of New Canaan. The intention behind this acquisition was to convert the historic estate into a public park and recreational area. The transformation not only preserved a piece of history but also opened the grounds for community enjoyment.
Lloyd had a chance to revisit the estate a few years back, during a birthday celebration organised by his wife. He described returning to Waveny as an emotional experience, acknowledging that it remains a significant part of his life. “Whenever I’m there, I feel like it’s still my home,” he remarked in the interview, reflecting the deep connection he holds with the land.
Today, the Waveny Park Conservancy oversees the estate, which now encompasses 450 acres of parkland and woodlands. This vibrant public space includes approximately 3.5 miles of trails, a serene pond, and expansive lawns and meadows, ensuring its status as a beloved local attraction. A survey revealed that nearly 80% of New Canaan residents visit the park regularly, underscoring its importance within the community.
From its origins as a private estate to becoming a cherished public park, Waveny has evolved while retaining its historical significance, much like its former resident, Christopher Lloyd, whose legacy continues to resonate through the world of entertainment.
