In a recent discussion, iconic singer Cyndi Lauper opened up about her extraordinary career and the challenges she faced before achieving fame. Now 73 years old, the artist is not only revisiting her past but also offering a unique glimpse into her life through a collaborative auction with Bonhams titled “Cyndi Lauper: Suitcase of Memories.” This two-part event is set to feature a diverse collection of Lauper’s fashion, accessories, and personal memorabilia.

Lauper’s career has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks. She recalls her early years with her band Blue Angel, a venture that ultimately disbanded in the early 1980s, leaving Lauper navigating what felt like an overwhelming void. Her path during these difficult times intersected with Laura Wills, the owner of the vintage clothing shop Screaming Mimi’s in New York City. Lauper fondly remembers shopping there while in Blue Angel, admiring the unique items that the store offered.

“I used to shop there when I was in Blue Angel, my first recording band,” Lauper shared. However, as the fortunes of Blue Angel faded, a friend encouraged her to seek employment at Screaming Mimi’s. “When I realised Blue Angel was not happening anymore, I shuddered to think it wasn’t,” she continued, explaining how Wills helped her chart a new course during a tumultuous period.
Despite her initial hesitation, Lauper was hired at the eclectic shop. Her memories of this time are laced with a sense of vulnerability. She admitted to often hiding from fellow musicians who would enter the store, overwhelmed by a sense of embarrassment and insecurity about her career.
“Other recording artists I knew would come in, and I would duck under the counter and hide,” Lauper recalled. She explained that this embarrassment stemmed from a harsh review she received as a member of Blue Angel. “You think you’re on top of the world, and then suddenly you’re not. It was hard for me. I was young,” she reflected.
Yet, Lauper emerged from this chapter stronger and more resilient. Working at Screaming Mimi’s not only bolstered her personal confidence but also solidified a bond with Wills, who would later assist her in curating items for the Bonhams auction. “I realised that sometimes you’re up, and sometimes you’re down, but it’s up to you to get back up and move forward,” she explained. This newfound perspective motivated Lauper to channel her experiences into her collection at the auction.
The upcoming Bonhams auction is not just a chance to revisit Lauper’s career, but also an opportunity for new audiences to connect with her artistic journey. “I thought it would be a great time to remind older people about a time in the past, and show younger people and inspire them to be creative,” Lauper shared.
The singer highlighted the influence of music on fashion during her formative years, expressing admiration for collaborations like those of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren. “Music always leads fashion a little bit,” she noted. For Lauper, the cross-pollination of these artistic domains has always served as a source of inspiration.
As the auction date approaches, Lauper is eager to see the reaction of attendees, particularly younger generations. She hopes her collection will ignite a spark of creativity and motivation among them, just as she was inspired during her own early experiences in the industry. “All of that stuff is in this show, and it’s an opportunity to create again with my colleagues,” Lauper expressed, looking forward to the memories and inspirations her items may evoke.
Over the years, Lauper has firmly established her place in the music industry, becoming a celebrated figure known for her distinctive voice and vibrant persona. As she prepares for this unique event, it is clear that Cyndi Lauper’s journey—from the depths of struggle to the heights of fame—continues to resonate, serving as an enduring testament to resilience and creativity in an ever-evolving industry.
