The Albany Police Department announced on October 23 that the remains found within a shed on Marlborough Court were indeed those of Carroll. The discovery was made on October 20, while law enforcement was executing a search warrant as part of the ongoing investigation into her case. According to police statements, cadaver dogs had detected a scent in the vicinity prior to the search.
During the autopsy conducted shortly after the remains were uncovered, officials confirmed that they belonged to Carroll, though they have yet to establish the cause of her death. The investigation into her disappearance remains ongoing, and no arrests have been reported at this time.

Carroll was last seen after being dropped off near First Street, reportedly to meet her boyfriend following a dispute between the couple. At that time, she had a child who was just a year old. Carroll informed family members that she was heading to New York City, but she never returned home.

Albany County District Attorney, Lee Kindlon, indicated that leads in the investigation had directed authorities to the residential area where the remains were ultimately found. He highlighted the commitment of the police to uncover the truth surrounding Carroll’s disappearance, stating that numerous resources had been deployed to pursue all available avenues of inquiry.
On October 22, a candlelight vigil was held in honour of Carroll, attended by nearly 100 family members and community supporters. This gathering occurred just a day prior to the identification of her remains, embodying the length of time that the community has been seeking closure regarding her disappearance.
Margaret Carroll, Ashley’s mother, expressed her gratitude upon the confirmation of the remains. “I’m grateful, because I didn’t think I’d see this day,” she told reporters. “She’s happy, I know she is. She was feisty. She was a handful. That was my girl, and I miss her more than ever.”
Cousin Michelle Thompson echoed the sentiments of the family, stating that the recent discovery has brought them some relief after years of uncertainty and anguish. “The family can relax their mind,” she explained, noting the weight of unanswered questions that burdened them over the past 16 years. “These are all the questions that have been running through everyone’s head for 16 whole years.”
Thompson further urged anyone with information related to Carroll’s case to come forward. She emphasised the necessity for justice and a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding her cousin’s death. “It’s been a long time—16 years of waiting agony, sleepless nights,” she remarked.
The identification of Ashley Carroll’s remains marks a somber milestone in a case that has lingered in the minds of many in Albany. As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to piecing together the details of her tragic story. Community members and family alike now await further developments, hopeful for justice and resolution in what has been an enduring nightmare.
