According to a statement from Massachusetts State Police, the first reports of a wrong-way driver emerged around 3:23 a.m. Witnesses alerted authorities as the motorist travelled southbound in the northbound lanes. Just minutes later, the vehicle collided head-on with another car near Sargent Street.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the wrong-way vehicle engulfed in flames. Despite their efforts, the young driver did not survive the impact. The other driver involved in the accident was transported to a hospital in Boston with minor injuries.

The deceased student was a senior at Triton Regional High School in Newbury, Massachusetts. Superintendent Brian Forget expressed deep sorrow at the loss, describing the teen as a well-liked and active member of the school community. “Our student was highly involved and connected to many within the Triton community,” Forget remarked in a statement, highlighting the young man’s kindness and compassion. “We are heartbroken, and as a community, we grieve this loss. Our deepest condolences go out to the family.”
Witnesses at the scene recounted a chaotic and distressing sight. One observer reported hearing loud pops, suggesting something was breaking during the collision. “When we turned the corner, we saw everything up in flames. We saw them running out. They tried to do— it was too big, and no one could do anything about it,” the witness explained.

The circumstances that led the high school senior to drive on the wrong side of the highway remain unclear. In light of the incident, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. No information has been released concerning the circumstances surrounding the student’s decision to drive in the wrong direction.
In response to the tragedy, Triton Regional High School has announced that counselling and support services will be made available for students and staff. These resources will be offered on Monday, 26 October, and the following days to help the school community cope with the loss.
This incident is not isolated; it adds to a troubling trend of wrong-way crashes on Route 1. Just this year, there have been at least two other incidents involving wrong-way drivers, one of which resulted in the death of State Trooper Kevin Trainor in May. Another collision occurred in June, injuring a state trooper in Peabody.
The community of Revere is now left grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event, mourning the loss of a promising young life. The school and local authorities encourage everyone impacted by the accident to seek help and support in the coming days as they process their grief and the circumstances surrounding this catastrophic event.
