The couple first crossed paths at the youthful age of 18 during a Halloween dance hosted at the Horwich Conservative Club in their hometown. Their romance blossomed, leading to their marriage two years later at Horwich Parish Church. Reflecting on their milestone, Edmund expressed his appreciation for the royal recognition, noting it was a thoughtful initiative orchestrated by their youngest daughter. “It’s really special, isn’t it? My daughter got in touch with them and arranged it. I just think it’ll be a nice finish with the rest of the cards,” he shared with The Bolton News.

To celebrate their anniversary, Edmund and Evelyn hosted a gathering filled with family and friends at a local pub. The couple’s love for one another and their cherished connections were evident, as Edmund remarked, “All the family were there, all our friends and relatives.” The couple’s family tree has expanded to include three daughters and five grandchildren, with ages ranging from 9 to 22 years. They enjoy a close-knit family life, with their daughters residing nearby, allowing for frequent gatherings.
Edmund shared, “Every day at least one of them calls round. We meet up every week and have a meal on a Wednesday. I even bring my sister across as well, she’s 85 now.” This commitment to family values highlights the Hicks’ enduring dedication to maintaining relationships with loved ones.
In addition to family, the couple has a passion for travel, visiting numerous destinations including Bali, Singapore, and the popular holiday spot of Tenerife. Edmund spoke fondly of their love for the Spanish island, stating, “We must have been there 10 million times. We used to go for three months at a time.” Recently, they have begun to explore European city breaks, with trips to cities such as Prague, Brussels, and Krakow.
While their adventurous spirit has contributed to their shared experiences, Edmund was quick to highlight a more humorous take on the foundation of their successful marriage. When asked about the secrets to fostering a long-lasting relationship, he jokingly remarked, “As far as I’m concerned, just accept you’re wrong on everything.” His playful banter was underscored by genuine affection, as he added, “Obviously we love each other and she’s right for me; that’s all I can say.”
Their remarkable journey together exemplifies the bonds formed through love, compromise, and shared experiences. Over the years, the couple has weathered life’s challenges while enjoying countless colourful adventures together. Whether spending time with family or travelling the world, Edmund and Evelyn continue to inspire those around them.
As they look back on the past six decades, their story serves as a testament to the enduring power of love and companionship. The community has joined in celebrating this monumental milestone, with many expressing their warm wishes and congratulations to the Hicks.
