In a tragic incident on Friday, 23rd October, 2026, nine people lost their lives and 34 others were injured in a shooting at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church located in Hmoud, Jordan. The attack occurred during a funeral service, and authorities have characterised it as a deliberate act of terrorism.
The Jordanian Public Security Directorate (PSD) reported that three suspects have been arrested following the incident. The suspects were apprehended in an abandoned house in the Karak governorate, approximately 77 miles south of the capital, Amman, just before dawn on Monday, 26th October. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the suspects and security forces during the operation, resulting in injuries to all three suspects, but fortunately, no security personnel were harmed.

According to local news agency Petra, the shooting unfolded amidst a gathering of mourners at the church. Eyewitness accounts indicate a chaotic scene as three armed men approached the venue, leading attendees to scramble for safety. Video footage from the incident captured stark images of shattered glass and bloodstains throughout the church, illustrating the harrowing event. One mourner described the fear and confusion of the situation, noting that some individuals took cover while others were clutching loved ones.

Despite the tragic outcome, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, and the PSD has refrained from disclosing the identities of the arrested individuals. Jordan’s Interior Minister Mazin Al-Farrayeh expressed a commitment to maintaining public safety, stating, “We have apprehended the killers and we will channel this tragedy into decisive measures that safeguard the lives of our citizens.” He further emphasised the government’s dedication to examining the factors leading youth towards extremism.
In the aftermath of the attack, King Abdullah II paid tribute to the victims and visited injured individuals receiving treatment in hospitals. On social media platform X, he stressed the importance of accountability for the perpetrators, declaring that those who promote ideologies that threaten national unity will face consequences. “We pray that the martyrs’ souls rest in peace and wish the injured a speedy recovery. May God protect and watch over Jordan and its people,” he stated.
The victims of the attack were remembered in a joint funeral held at the church on Sunday, 25th October. Subsequently, the ninth victim was interred near Amman on 26th October. This event has left a profound impact on the predominantly Muslim nation, where Christians constitute approximately 2.1% of the population, according to a 2021 report by the U.S. Department of State.
The attack has raised significant security concerns about the safety of religious minorities in Jordan. With Christians being the largest religious minority, their vulnerability in such attacks has prompted discussions on extremism and social cohesion within the country. Jordan has historically boasted a degree of religious tolerance, yet incidents like this challenge the fabric of society.
Witnesses have described the moments of terror as lasting around 15 minutes, highlighting the chaos that ensued as people fled in all directions, holding onto their families and friends for safety. Khalid al-Mdanat, a mourner present during the attack, recounted the scene vividly, illustrating the fear experienced by those in attendance.
As the nation grapples with this tragedy, both the government and the general public are calling for a reassessment of security measures and a united front against terrorism. The Jordanian authorities remain vigilant as they investigate the motivations behind this heinous act, pledging that justice will be served for the victims and their families.
