A remarkable story has emerged from Pennsylvania, where 90-year-old Margie Hennesy is breaking stereotypes about aging and physical fitness. This veteran of life has taken up weightlifting and is preparing for her first-ever Hyrox fitness competition, a challenge she embraced shortly after turning 90.

In a thought-provoking personal essay published in ‘Women’s Health’, Hennesy described her journey into strength training, which began following the loss of her husband with whom she shared a 62-year marriage. Faced with the profound grief of his passing, Hennesy made a pivotal decision: rather than succumbing to her sorrow, she resolved to embrace independence. “I needed to decide what to do with the rest of my life,” she wrote, articulating a newfound determination to take charge of her surroundings.
Initially, Hennesy began by tackling household chores that had traditionally been shared with her late husband. “I started mowing our lawn, hauling heavy bags of mulch, and managing chores,” she said. Despite recommendations from friends to hire help for safety reasons, she took pride in her capabilities, relishing the strength and independence it afforded her.

After her birthday this year, her daughter-in-law, Becky Hennesy — a dedicated athlete herself — was inspired to encourage Margie to elevate her fitness journey. Witnessing Margie’s prowess as she effortlessly lifted a 40-pound bag of mulch, Becky proposed they both enter the Hyrox competition, which consists of an 8-kilometre run interspersed with various fitness challenges.
Hennesy, who has always harboured a competitive spirit, wasted no time in committing to the training. “I was at the gym within days of signing up,” she reminisced. Drawing upon her brief history with weightlifting from earlier decades, Margie was eager to learn and adapt to a more rigorous fitness regimen.
Her training sessions typically last between 60 to 90 minutes, commencing with a warm-up on the treadmill before progressing to an extensive range of exercises. Focused on the specific challenges the Hyrox competition presents, Hennesy trains on ski ergs, sled pushes and pulls, burpees, and various strength-building activities. Notably, she has progressed to pushing a 200-pound sled, an impressive feat considering she began at 60 pounds.
Alongside strength training, Hennesy engages in additional cardio activities, regularly walking several miles and integrating short jogging bursts into her routine. While she admits to not being overly strict with her diet, she is conscious of incorporating adequate protein and fostering a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
Central to Hennesy’s success has been her unyielding determination, bolstered by a strong support network. As she acknowledged, “Motivation can be fleeting, but determination is what keeps me striving for improvement.” Her family, particularly her daughter-in-law and granddaughter, play a crucial role, providing encouragement and companionship during her workouts. “We celebrate small victories and support each other through tougher days,” she shared, highlighting the sense of community that has emerged from their joint fitness journey.
Beyond her impressive physical achievements, Margie Hennesy’s story serves as a powerful reminder that age should not be a barrier to ambition. “You’re never too old to get stronger or discover what you’re capable of,” she stated, embodying a spirit of resilience that challenges common perceptions about ageing.
As part of their collaborative effort, Margie and Becky have also teamed up with Race for Impact to raise funds for global health initiatives in their upcoming competition. They aim to highlight the importance of access to basic healthcare, nutrition, and vaccinations for underserved communities, believing that crucial life-saving services should not solely be privileges reserved for the fortunate.
With her unwavering spirit and zest for life, Margie Hennesy is reshaping the narrative around ageing and fitness. Her journey serves to inspire many that irrespective of age, there is always room to grow, challenge oneself, and embrace the possibilities that life still holds.
