A Minnesota man has garnered widespread acclaim for his quick thinking and bravery after intervening to save a group of schoolchildren from potential danger. Ebro Ahmed, 27, leaped into action on Monday, October 19, when he witnessed a school bus in distress in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The vehicle, transporting 19 students from Battle Creek Middle School, was moving at a slow speed while its doors were flung open and its lights flashed, signalling an emergency.

Ahmed was outside a convenience store when he first spotted the bus. According to reports, he felt a jolt of fear as the bus passed by, prompting him to act. “When it drove past me, it really shook me,” he said in an interview. Unable to ignore the alarming sight, he quickly made the decision to board the bus and take control of the situation.

Surveillance footage from the nearby Ya Bricks Snacks and Tobacco store captured Ahmed as he ceased playing with his football and rushed towards the bus, which came to a halt just moments after he climbed on board. Once inside, he assessed the situation and noticed that the driver appeared to be suffering from a medical emergency—later described as likely having a seizure.
Despite having no prior experience operating a bus, Ahmed remained composed, although initially confused by the gear shift. He recalled accidentally shifting the bus into reverse, causing it to roll backwards. Realising his mistake, he quickly returned it to neutral and engaged the brakes to prevent further movement.
In the chaos, some of the children on board expressed their fear while others remained surprisingly calm. Ahmed recounted how two girls at the front helped him by holding on to his phone and glasses as he worked to secure everyone’s safety. Recognising the urgency of the situation, he contacted emergency services to report the incident.
While he managed the bus, he noted that the driver was slowly regaining consciousness but was still disoriented. Ahmed credited his calmness under pressure to lessons learned from the popular television series Grey’s Anatomy, where he observed characters maintaining composure in dire situations. “In Grey’s Anatomy, you never see doctors panic,” he explained, suggesting that the drama helped him prepare mentally for such unexpected challenges.
As Ahmed recounted his experience, he emphasised that his actions felt like a duty, particularly considering the well-being of the children involved. He remarked, “It’s kids we’re talking about, you know. Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it.”
The situation ultimately ended positively, with all 19 students unharmed. Authorities, including paramedics who arrived on the scene, confirmed a medical emergency had indeed occurred, and the bus driver was later taken to the hospital for evaluation. In a follow-up statement, Saint Paul Public Schools mentioned that an additional bus was dispatched to continue the students’ journey home and that staff members were available to provide emotional support to those affected by the incident.
The bus driver involved in the episode has since been released from hospital care and is recovering at home. Ahmed explained that he chose to respect the driver’s privacy during the emergency, refraining from asking too many questions once the authorities arrived.
In recognition of his brave actions, Saint Paul Public Schools took to social media to thank Ahmed, calling him a true hero for ensuring the safety of the students. They wrote, “Thank you Ebro! Helping the driver, and ensuring our students got home safely, makes you a true hero!”
Despite the accolades he has received, Ahmed remains humble. He expressed a belief that anyone in his situation would have done the same. His selfless act serves as a reminder of the potential for ordinary individuals to exhibit extraordinary courage during crises.
