According to Sheriff Grady Judd, the father and son were in the drive-thru lane at around 6:23 PM, when the father encountered issues with his credit card payment. After finding himself distracted, he pulled the car into a nearby parking space to sort out the payment problem. This situation was reportedly unfamiliar to the family, as they had recently relocated to the area.

Sheriff Judd described the father as a well-regarded manager at a local Lowe’s, highlighting that the distress caused by the incident has left him in shock. As he attempted to resolve the payment issue, the father removed the handgun he was carrying for comfort, believing it was secured.
In a tragic turn of events, while the father was preoccupied with the card issue, the child spotted the unattended firearm. Authorities believe that the boy picked up the weapon and accidentally discharged it, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face. A bullet hole was also discovered in the roof of the vehicle, indicating the severity of the incident.
Following the gunshot, onlookers reported seeing the father in a state of panic, running around the parking lot as a woman from a nearby car swiftly called emergency services. Despite immediate medical attention, the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Lakeland Regional Health, around 7:30 PM.
Sheriff Judd referred to the situation as a “horrible tragedy,” expressing deep sympathy for the family affected by this devastating loss. He stated that while Florida law allows for the possibility of charging the father with a third-degree felony in similar cases, the Sheriff’s Office does not intend to pursue criminal charges at present. The decision regarding any potential charges will ultimately rest with the State Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with both the Bartow Police Department and the homicide unit of the sheriff’s office.
In light of the incident, Sheriff Judd emphasised the emotional impact, pointing out that this tragedy has left a family devastated. “There’s going to be a family without a son tonight,” he lamented, highlighting the ripple effects on relatives and the wider community.
Local authorities are now focusing on addressing the broader implications of gun safety, particularly regarding children. Efforts are being made to encourage responsible firearm storage and to increase awareness about the dangers of unsecured weapons in households with young children. Resources such as BeSMARTforkids.org provide indispensable information on how to mitigate risks associated with firearms.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the loss and seeking ways to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has stated that it will provide further information to the State Attorney’s Office once the necessary protocols have been completed.
While the family remembers their beloved child, the call for increased firearm safety measures remains urgent, as communities strive to protect their most vulnerable members from unnecessary harm.
