After settling into her new home, Thurman decided to make her way to the shoe store. “My mother took a nap the next day, and I took about 75 cents off the table and headed out,” she explained. The young girl’s fear turned palpable as she found herself in the back of a squad car alongside a kind but intimidating policeman. “He held me on his lap, and I was so scared.”
