A 47-year-old woman from Illinois has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of her mother after an alleged deliberate head-on collision with a semi-truck. Jamie L. Rhode faces multiple serious charges, including first-degree premeditated murder and attempted first-degree murder, following the incident that took place on 24 July.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle crash on US Route 54, just before 8 p.m. local time. According to authorities, Rhode was driving her Toyota RAV4 when she allegedly steered into the path of an oncoming semi-truck pulling a trailer. Alongside Rhode were her mother, 73-year-old Cherie K. Wells, and her teenage son. While the truck driver emerged unscathed, both Rhode and her mother sustained serious injuries from the crash; tragically, Wells later succumbed to her injuries.
Sheriff David Greenwood revealed that evidence suggests Rhode’s actions were premeditated. Authorities concluded that she acted with the intention of killing all three occupants in her vehicle, stating, “Her plan was to kill all three of them. Her plan was to kill herself, and she was afraid of dying alone.” Greenwood added that preceding the crash, Rhode had picked up her mother from a nursing home in Pittsfield, Illinois.
An arrest warrant was issued for Rhode by Judge J. Frank McCartney on 16 October. Shortly thereafter, she was apprehended on 20 October and is currently held at Pike County Jail. Rhode is expected to make her initial court appearance on 23 October to face the charges against her.
