Jennifer’s journey into motherhood began with a long and arduous labour, lasting 40 hours, before Baxter’s arrival. Describing him as “perfect,” she vividly recalls the joy of holding her son for the first time. Weighing in at seven pounds and nine ounces and measuring 21 inches, Baxter captured the hearts of both his parents. Jennifer describes the moment, saying, “He came out with these really full lips, looking right at me with his eyes; it was just the craziest thing.”

For the next four years, the family experienced blissful parenting in their Newport Beach home. Jennifer basked in the joys of motherhood, celebrating the mundane activities that became special moments with Baxter. Whether sharing remedies for his occasional discomfort or documenting milestones and memories on her Instagram, the bond between mother and son blossomed. Shortly after Baxter’s third birthday, Jennifer and her husband, Bryce, welcomed their second son, Baron, further enriching their lives.
Tragically, the family’s joy began to unravel when they noticed something unusual about Baxter’s left eye. What started as a subtle crossing during playtime led them to seek an appointment with an ophthalmologist. Initially diagnosed with strabismus, a common vision disorder, the doctor recommended patching treatment. However, after conducting a precautionary MRI, the family received devastating news: doctors had discovered a brain tumour. Their lives were turned upside down in an instant, as the severity of the situation began to sink in.
Jennifer describes that moment as an overwhelming blur, filled with shock and disbelief. Following further examinations and surgery, Baxter was diagnosed with diffuse midline glioma, an aggressive and rare form of brain cancer. Faced with this unimaginable reality, Jennifer and Bryce took immediate and proactive steps, exploring various clinical trials and experimental treatments in a desperate bid to save their son. Hoping for a miracle, Jennifer reveals, “To the very last day, we honestly thought that he was going to recover.”
The following months were heart-wrenching as Baxter’s condition deteriorated, taking away his ability to walk, talk, and even swallow. However, even in his final days, Baxter managed to maintain a semblance of his spirit. Jennifer fondly remembers how he could still manage a smile and a thumbs-up, symbolising indomitable resilience even as the disease advanced.
The day before his death was marked by tenderness, as his parents devoted the time to read his favourite books and recount stories from his life. They held his hand throughout the day, celebrating the joy he had brought into their lives. “I told him his whole life story,” Jennifer recalls, cherishing those final moments of connection.
When the day came for Baxter to leave this world, Jennifer announced the heartbreaking news through her Instagram account. In a poignant message, she conveyed her sorrow and the profound love that would forever surround his memory. “Heaven welcomed our angel,” she wrote, capturing the heartbreak of losing her son.
As Jennifer reflects on Baxter’s short life, she finds solace not in specific memories but in the everyday moments they shared. Whether it was crafting together, enjoying smoothies, or exploring the aisles of toys in a store, every single day spent with Baxter was a treasure. “It was just so simple,” she says, summarising the impact of their bond. “Every day was special with him.”
Through her journey, Jennifer Burnham illustrates the resilience and strength of a mother’s love amidst tragedy. Her story serves as a reminder to cherish the seemingly mundane moments in life, for it is within those moments that profound joy can be found. Now, as she navigates life without Baxter, Jennifer hopes that sharing her experience might help others facing similar challenges, fostering a sense of community and hope in the darkest of times.
