Acclaimed actress Rachel Bay Jones, known for her role in “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” is taking on a new challenge alongside her daughter, Miranda Jones, in the upcoming film “Rise and Shine.” The drama, which also features newcomer Ana Sharp, who lives with cerebral palsy, is set to debut in AMC Theatres on 23 October before becoming available for streaming on Angel.

Rachel Bay Jones, who has won a Tony Award, understands the complexities and challenges of a career in acting. In a candid interview with PEOPLE, she revealed that she spent years attempting to guide Miranda away from the performing arts. “I spent her whole childhood steering her away from the family business, knowing how hard it is on the tender-hearted,” the 56-year-old expressed. However, Miranda’s passion for acting could not be stifled. While studying in college, she eventually confided in her mother her desire to pursue a career in the arts. “She sat on the edge of my bed, burst into tears, and confessed, ‘Mom, I want to be an actress! I’m so sorry!’” Jones recalled.
This heartfelt admission resulted in a mixture of emotions for both. “I was crying too, for complicated reasons: Sad that she’d been holding back her desires thinking she was sparing me, but fiercely proud of her, and excited to see every role she will tackle in her career,” Rachel said. The two are now making their big-screen debuts together in “Rise and Shine,” a story inspired by the true experiences of Janice Steele and her late daughter, Terri, who also had cerebral palsy. In the film, Rachel portrays Janice, while Ana Sharp assumes the role of Terri. Miranda steps into the character of Stephanie, a romantic rival in the story.
For Ana Sharp, landing this role represents a significant personal milestone. Having faced challenges in pursuing acting due to her disability, she reflects on a pivotal moment from her childhood when a classmate told her she would never be cast in a lead role. “I thought ‘Challenge accepted!’” Sharp remarked, demonstrating her determination to defy expectations. She has recently established herself in the industry as a voice actor, but this film marks her debut on the feature film stage.
In addition to the storyline, the project is notable for its commitment to authentic representation. By casting actors with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, and Down syndrome to portray characters with the same conditions, the film aims to bring genuine experiences to the forefront. Jen Greenstreet, producer and founder of the nonprofit studio Just Like You Films, emphasised the importance of this representation, stating, “We set out to tell a story that could genuinely shift how people see each other and the world.” She believes the film embodies messages of dignity and belonging, conveying the idea that storytelling can raise empathy and understanding.
Sharp expressed her hope that “Rise and Shine” will leave audiences with a greater appreciation for people with disabilities. “Having a disability is very challenging, and sometimes even heartbreaking, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dream big or accomplish the things you want to do in your life,” she explained. “We have so much ability. We just need the chance to let it shine.”
The experience of filming together has been a rewarding one for both Rachel and Miranda. For the younger Jones, having her mother by her side on set was particularly special. “I’ve grown up watching my mum perform, and I have so much respect for how hard she works,” she noted. “It’s kind of like having a built-in acting coach, but she gives me the space to find things for myself.” The learning opportunity has been invaluable, as Miranda finds herself inspired by Rachel’s dedication and skill.
Rachel also relished the chance to observe Miranda’s journey as an actress. Although the idea of being directly present on set made her anxious not to intimidate her daughter, she managed to sneak glimpses of Miranda’s performances. “I was giddy,” Rachel said, recalling how she watched Miranda’s confidence blossom during her first day of filming. “When Miranda stepped on set the first day, she was very focused,” Rachel reminisced, noting the precious moment when they exchanged a proud, confident smile.
“Rise and Shine” promises to be a heartfelt film that reflects the challenges and triumphs faced by individuals with disabilities and their families. It is set to premiere on 23 October in AMC Theatres across the nation before being available on streaming platforms. The film stands as a testament to perseverance, hope, and the unyielding spirit that drives individuals to pursue their dreams against all odds.
