Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered that three occupants had managed to escape the blaze. However, four children were still trapped inside the burning home. Fire crews were confronted with dire conditions and had to breach an exterior wall to gain access to the interior. Despite their efforts, three of the children – two boys, aged eight and five, and a three-year-old girl – tragically did not survive.
The mother of the children and a 10-year-old boy were subsequently evacuated from the premises and airlifted to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for their severe injuries. Unfortunately, news later confirmed that the 10-year-old boy also succumbed to his injuries, as reported by various local news outlets.

Although the identities of the victims have not been officially released, District Attorney Tonda Curry shared that the children were grandchildren of a local sheriff’s deputy, with the mother being the deputy’s daughter. This personal connection has deeply affected the local community, with many expressing their sorrow over the devastating loss.
Leslie Leistikow, a neighbour of the family, reminisced about the children, describing them as “sweethearts” and reflecting on how they were well-liked in the area. Another neighbour, Wesley Leistikow, recounted her horrifying experience that morning when she was awakened by the smell of smoke, followed by the sound of fire trucks and cries for help.

In light of the tragedy, Canton Independent School District Superintendent Brian Nichols issued a heartfelt statement expressing his condolences. “It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the loss of students at Canton Elementary and Canton Intermediate Schools,” Nichols stated. He emphasised the importance of community support during such trying times, calling for unity and compassion among residents.
