In a disturbing incident highlighting the ongoing problem of racism within sports, University of Miami lineman Damon Wilson II took to social media on 17 October to share a series of offensive messages he received after his team’s hard-fought victory over Florida State University. The 21-year-old athlete posted a screenshot on his Instagram Stories, depicting a barrage of racist and homophobic slurs directed at him.

The messages came in the wake of the Hurricanes’ thrilling 43–35 win in a double-overtime clash against Florida State. Following the match, Wilson became the target of hate speech from an account purportedly linked to Kade McLendon, who is employed by the Florida Bar as a computer technician. Among the derogatory remarks were threats of sexual violence and vile references to slavery, further exacerbating the trauma of racism faced by many within the sporting community.

In his post, Wilson wrote, “Glimpse into the life of a black student athlete,” clearly displaying the distressing reality many athletes of colour endure, often hidden behind the sheen of sporting triumph. The screenshots included threatening language aimed not just at Wilson, but at his family as well, underscoring a troubling trend of online abuse that has seen a marked increase in recent years.

In light of these events, the Florida Bar has placed McLendon on administrative leave while they conduct an internal investigation into the incident. The bar expressed their dismay regarding the messages sent from an employee’s account. They acknowledged the content as “ethically and morally reprehensible,” adding that it constitutes a violation of their internal social media policy for staff.
A spokesperson for the Florida Bar stated, “The Florida Bar is aware of messages that were possibly sent from an employee’s social media account that contained inappropriate content, and we have started an internal investigation into this matter.” They affirmed their commitment to upholding the integrity of their policies and ensuring that any due process rights are respected as the inquiry proceeds.
As of the time of publication, attempts to contact McLendon for his perspective on the situation have proven unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Damon Wilson’s heartbreaking experience adds to a larger dialogue regarding racism in sports, a conversation that continues to grow as more athletes choose to speak out against such abuses.
Wilson’s athletic journey reflects a path marked by resilience. He began his collegiate career at the University of Georgia before transferring to the University of Missouri for the previous season. This year marks his first season with the University of Miami, where he aims to make a positive impact both on and off the field.
The incidents surrounding Wilson have drawn attention not only to the individual case but also to the systemic issues of racism that persist in the realm of athletics and beyond. Prominent sports figures and organisations are beginning to call for more stringent measures to combat hate speech in all its forms, particularly in the online realm where anonymity often emboldens abusive behaviour.
As investigations continue and the sporting community rallies around Wilson, it remains essential to foster a culture of respect and equality. The ongoing support for athletes who stand against discrimination serves as a critical reminder of the need for change, both in attitudes and behaviours among fans and within sports institutions.
