A 65-year-old woman, Janine Lochrenberg, tragically lost her life in a shark attack while participating in an open-water swimming group off the southeastern coast of South Africa on Tuesday morning, 20th October. The incident occurred at Orient Beach in KuGompo, prompting local authorities to close two nearby beaches as they investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
Emergency services were alerted to the beach at around 7 a.m. local time, where they found Lochrenberg’s body. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that a swimming companion alerted authorities after the attack. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Lochrenberg suffered severe injuries from shark bites to her thigh and upper arm.

Mike Loewe, a fellow swimmer in the group, recounted the terrifying moment when Lochrenberg screamed, alerting her companions to her plight. “We were all in the water, swimming. We were wearing magnetic shark repellents on our feet. She had one on,” Loewe explained to local media outlet News24. Despite the immediate assistance of her fellow swimmers and a medic present in the group, efforts to resuscitate Lochrenberg were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
In response to this shocking incident, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality swiftly closed Orient Beach and the adjacent Eastern Beach to ensure public safety. A public notice emphasized the need for caution among beachgoers, urging them to refrain from entering the water in the affected areas. Luzuko Buku, a spokesperson for the municipality, expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, noting that Lochrenberg was a recreational swimmer enjoying the ocean.
As investigations begin, Buku indicated that city officials were trying to ascertain the specifics of the attack. Historical records maintained by the municipality reveal that the last confirmed shark-related fatality in the area occurred in 1997, with the most recent shark attack reported earlier in 2023.
Following Lochrenberg’s death, police have launched an inquest into the incident. The local swimming community, known for its close-knit nature, is grappling with the shock of this tragic event. Loewe shared, “Orient Beach is regarded by some as a safe beach. Janine just happened to be the person the shark took a bite at.”
Lochrenberg’s sister, Margot, reflected on her sibling’s love for the ocean, acknowledging the known risk of increased shark activity in East London. Her partner, Barbara Briceland, described Lochrenberg as a skilled swimmer, often swimming far beyond the breakers. The couple had been excited about their upcoming retirement plans and a three-week road trip together.
In addition to her passion for swimming, Lochrenberg was a valued member of the Viva Musica Ensemble, which has paid tribute to her contributions as a viola player. The ensemble noted her dedication despite her modest nature, stating, “Though quiet and unassuming, she kept us on our toes and continually pushed us to reach the highest standards of music possible. Janine will be greatly missed.”
The East London Open Water Swimming group also commemorated Lochrenberg in a heartfelt Facebook post, recognising her steadfast presence within the community. The group highlighted that the ocean was where Lochrenberg found joy, adding, “The ocean was Janine’s happy place. It was where she found her joy, and where so many of us were fortunate enough to share special moments with her.”
As the swimming community mourns the loss of one of its own, condolences have poured in for Lochrenberg’s family and loved ones. The East London Open Water Swimming group expressed their sorrow, declaring, “Rest peacefully, Janine. You will be so very missed, and you will always be part of our ocean family.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with open-water swimming, particularly in regions known for shark sightings. As investigations continue, authorities will undoubtedly strive to enhance safety measures for swimmers and beach enthusiasts along the coast.
