A father of four faced life-threatening injuries after a heavy section of tree fell on him during exceptionally high winds in San Jacinto, California. The incident took place around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, while Ricky Roldan was tending to his children’s toys in the backyard, as revealed in a GoFundMe campaign set up by his family to support his recovery.

Ricky’s mother, Alexandra, recounted the terrifying moment when a strong gust from a storm caused part of the tree to snap off and crush her son. “It was humongous. I tried moving it. It was so heavy. I couldn’t move it,” she recalled. Ricky was trapped beneath the 20-foot tree section for several agonising minutes following the accident, which his family described as “unfortunate.”

In a desperate attempt to assist her husband, Ricky’s wife, Erica, rushed out only to find that no neighbours were around to help. Acting quickly, she returned to the scene and managed to lift the heavy branch, enabling Ricky to crawl out from under the debris. “She runs out in a panic to the neighbours, and she sees nobody. She runs back and picks up the tree. So my son was able to crawl out,” Alexandra explained.
After being freed from the tree, Ricky was transported to a local hospital where he remained unconscious for several days. His mother reported that he suffered multiple injuries, including fractures to his ankle, foot, pelvis, ribs, and vertebrae. Given the extent of his injuries, doctors performed several surgeries, which included a critical procedure on his heart. Fortunately, medical professionals believe Ricky is on track for a full recovery.
Despite the positive outlook, the father remains in considerable pain as he navigates the arduous recovery process. As of October 20, the GoFundMe campaign has generated over £6,500 in donations to aid in covering medical expenses and support for the family during this challenging time. The heartfelt message on the fundraiser describes Ricky as “the most hard-working and kind-hearted man,” emphasising his dedication to his wife and children.
The outpouring of community support has been heartening for Ricky’s family during this difficult time. Alexandra, in particular, has taken a moment to reflect on the incident, offering poignant advice to those who may be listening. “Life is too short. Let the people you know that you love them,” she urged. “Let them know you love them.”
As the family continues to cope with the aftermath of the incident, they are optimistic about Ricky’s recovery and the support they have received from friends and neighbours alike. While the journey to full health may be long, the Roldan family remains hopeful, fortified by their strong bond and the community’s unwavering backing.
Ricky’s story serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can occur during extreme weather conditions, leaving families to confront unexpected challenges. Nevertheless, his resolve and the love of his family stand as a testament to the strength of community and the importance of cherishing loved ones.
