Megan Lambert was remembered fondly as a dedicated educator who had realised her lifelong ambition of teaching at Silver Rail. According to a statement from her family, Lambert was deeply passionate about her work and devoted to her students. “She loved Silver Rail—this was her dream job,” the family remarked. Described as compassionate and caring, Megan had a particular focus on supporting those with special needs and always advocated for the underprivileged. Her involvement extended beyond the classroom; she volunteered as a volleyball coach and even declined payment for her first season to ensure that all children could participate.
Little Rhoam Summer was the youngest victim, and his grandfather, Bryan Jolly, reflected on his adventurous spirit. Jolly described Rhoam as “very bright, very mischievous, and very fun-loving.” The boy’s parents, Kelik and Lillian Summer, shared heartwarming memories, including his early determination and a knack for storytelling. “He could do anything,” they said, recalling his first sink bath and his excitement in cooking meals with them. They encouraged those wishing to honour Rhoam’s memory to embrace their creativity through drawing, with particular love for sharks, dinosaurs, and imaginative monsters.

In addition to Lambert and Rhoam, two other students—a boy aged 8 and another aged 11—were also fatally shot during the incident, while a 54-year-old teacher, Becky Drury, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A 7-year-old girl named Saylor Graham-Poarch was also wounded, prompting the creation of a GoFundMe campaign to assist her family with the associated medical costs and hardships.
The identity of the attacker has been confirmed as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former student of the school. Reports indicate that a heroic act from an uninjured teacher was instrumental in preventing further violence; she reportedly threw her mobile phone at the gunman and attempted to subdue him. Subsequently, a 36-year-old man entered the classroom and was able to neutralise the threat permanently.

This heartbreaking event has left a small community in mourning, as neighbours and friends grapple with the loss of bright young lives and a committed educator. The impact of the tragedy is profound, and local authorities are providing support to the school community as they navigate the aftermath.
In a statement addressing the incident, Bend’s police department expressed condolences to the families affected, acknowledging the wide-reaching ramifications of such violence in educational settings. The community has responded with an outpouring of grief, empathy, and solidarity, as residents come together to support one another during this unimaginably painful time.
As investigations continue, the community is left to reflect on the senselessness of the act and the precious lives lost. Efforts to highlight the importance of community safety and mental health awareness will likely grow in the wake of this tragedy, as schools nationwide strive to ensure a secure learning environment for all students.
