In an unusual and chaotic scene, a large green bird caused a stir at Chicago O’Hare International Airport during the afternoon of Tuesday, 13th October. Witnesses recounted how the bird, believed to be a parrot, swooped around the terminal, particularly near the Air France check-in line, landing on passengers’ heads and luggage.

Footage from the incident, which was shared by local news stations CBS Chicago and ABC7, captured the bizarre spectacle of the bird navigating through crowds of startled travellers. Eyewitnesses reported that the creature exhibited erratic behaviour, often attempting to nip at people while perching on their belongings.
Paris Elbert, an airport employee who recorded the bewildering encounter, described the event as a mix of amusement and concern. “It was funny but it was crazy. Sad too,” Elbert remarked. Many bystanders initially thought the bird was endearing, but the atmosphere changed swiftly as the creature displayed aggressive tendencies whenever anyone approached.
Initial investigations suggested that the bird had flown into the airport through an open door, leading to increased speculation about its condition. Notably, the animal was missing a few feathers around its neck, raising concerns among staff regarding its overall health and safety.
Despite passengers’ intentions to catch the bird, it seemed more inclined to defend its territory rather than take flight. Elbert added that as individuals attempted to interact with the creature, it chose aggression over retreat, making it difficult for anyone to help.
Eventually, a handy solution was found. An observant janitor intervened, managing to secure the bird using her shirt. Elbert confirmed that the janitor, whose name has yet to be disclosed, took the creature to a local veterinarian to ensure it was unharmed and to check if it bore a microchip for identification.
This incident at O’Hare is reminiscent of another unusual occurrence earlier this month at Miami International Airport. In that incident, a traveller was apprehended for allegedly attempting to smuggle live birds concealed in his underwear. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered six cylindrical containers, each harbouring live birds, after observing an unusual bulge in the man’s attire during secondary inspection.
Once again, the aviation community is reminded of the occasionally unpredictable nature of travel, which can sometimes take an unexpected turn with events such as these. Authorities at airports are continuously vigilant yet also quite accustomed to the peculiarities that arise in bustling travel hubs.
As of now, Chicago O’Hare Airport officials have not publicly commented further on the feathered intruder or how it might have managed to enter the terminal. The incident, while initially alarming, concluded without serious injury to any of the travellers and demonstrated both the charm and chaos that can arise in such busy environments.
As investigations continue into the parrot’s origins and well-being, it stands as a testament to the unexpected marvels that can occur even in the busiest of places, leaving both passengers and staff with a story to share long after the incident has been resolved.
