In a recent interview, documentary co-director Lance Oppenheim shared insights into a surprising moment captured in the film “You Can See Everything,” which features Elizabeth Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans. Oppenheim, who directed the film alongside Nathan Fielder, spoke about how Evans ended up appearing nude during filming—an occurrence that came about quite unexpectedly.

The film documents the lives of Holmes and Evans in the lead-up to Holmes’ prison sentence, which began in May 2023. With a crew of seven shooting for up to 16 hours a day at the couple’s home, the directors immersed themselves in their routine to provide a comprehensive look at their lives. During one of the many filming sessions, Oppenheim recounted a particular afternoon spent with Evans at the gym, where a casual conversation took a surprising turn.
After their workout, Oppenheim inquired about Evans’s plans for the rest of the day. It was here that Evans announced he would be taking a shower. Before the director could process this, Evans stripped off and jumped into the shower, resulting in an unanticipated scene that ultimately earned the documentary an R rating due to its graphic nudity.
Oppenheim remarked, “It seems like he really had something he wanted to show to us and to the world.” This candid moment contributes to the film’s exploration of the personal lives of Holmes and Evans, who met in 2017 and became engaged the following year. They welcomed their first child, William, in July 2021—just before the commencement of Holmes’s highly publicised criminal trial.
Holmes, who gained notoriety as the founder of Theranos, was charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud in January 2022. Following her conviction, she received a sentence of more than 11 years in prison in November 2022. Despite the serious nature of her situation, the documentary reveals glimpses into the day-to-day realities of her life and that of her partner, Evans.
In the film, Evans assumed an unexpected role by managing Holmes’ social media accounts, specifically her X (formerly Twitter) account, indicating he had access to her login information. This revelation brings an additional layer to the narrative, highlighting the complexities of their relationship amid the tumultuous events surrounding Holmes’s legal troubles.
Reports indicate that Holmes welcomed her second child in February 2023, while still facing the repercussions of her previous actions. Following her sentencing, she reported to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, where she has since had her sentence reduced by two years for good behaviour. According to the Bureau of Prisons, her release is now scheduled for February 22, 2030, with plans to transition to a halfway house, the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, in August 2027.
“You Can See Everything” is currently showing in theatres, offering audiences a unique perspective on the lives of a couple navigating through extraordinary circumstances. With its raw moments, including Evans’s unexpected nudity and candid discussions, the film aims to present an unfiltered view of their world.
Reflecting on the documentary process and the moments it captured, Oppenheim has provided viewers with an insight into how deeply personal experiences shaped the narrative. The unexpected events during filming serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of documentary storytelling, bringing audiences closer to the real-life complexities faced by Holmes and Evans.
