Monica Abramov and her husband, Dima, reside on a property in South Florida that has become a sanctuary for various animals, particularly ducks. The couple has gained acclaim online for their efforts in rescuing local wildlife, which has dramatically altered both their lifestyle and outlook on animal care. Through the family’s social media accounts under the username @ChaosWithMaggie, they share heartwarming and sometimes humorous videos of their fur and feathered friends, including their dog, Maggie.

Their journey began when they observed a mother duck, affectionately named Moira, struggling to raise her brood. Despite laying eggs, Moira was only able to successfully hatch one duckling. However, the family soon noticed that this little duckling had disappeared, and Moira remained broody, sitting forlornly on her empty nest. Moved by her plight, the Abramovs resolved to assist her in becoming a mother.
Initially, the couple attempted to provide Moira with ducklings purchased from a local retailer, only to realise that these domestic ducks were not suited for life near their property and were rejected by Moira. Undeterred, they decided to keep the ducks they acquired. Monica’s social media account, which originally began when they adopted Maggie, soon documented their efforts in helping Moira find a family of her own.
The next strategy involved rescuing ducklings from a nearby pond, but unfortunately, those attempts also led to disappointment as the ducklings failed to thrive. Determined to see Moira finally become a mum, the Abramovs sourced fertile eggs from an online hatchery. Their perseverance paid off after a tense three-week wait when a duckling, named Miri—short for Miracle—finally hatched. This joyful event marked a new chapter for Moira, who was visibly delighted to be a mother at last.
The residence of the Abramov family has transformed into what resembles a quaint petting zoo. Their interactions with ducks have sparked significant interest, evidenced by a growing online following. One notable viral moment featured a comical video of Dima’s unexpected friendship with another duck named Buddy, showcasing the wildlife that has nestled into their lives.
Monica noted how the couple’s altruistic acts also served practical purposes. “When we started helping ducks around our property, it was hot and sunny here in Florida. We had to set up water for them and provide shade,” she explained. Her husband took the initiative to create a shaded area and a kiddie pool, which attracted more ducks needing assistance. This compelling narrative of care resonated with many social media users, thus enabling the family’s platform to flourish.
Their duck-venture has not only entertained but also educated the Abramovs. They have become keen observers and quick learners, adapting to the various nuances of duck behaviour through the information shared by their followers. The couple has discovered surprising facts—such as the difference between ducklings and adult ducks, as well as unfamiliar terminologies like ‘bills’ for duck beaks.
Despite their newfound knowledge, they make it clear they do not profess to be experts. Monica noted the sharp learning curve, especially learning to manage the mess that comes with keeping ducks—often quite messy guests. The ducks tend to favour hanging out in the garage, especially during the frequent rain showers that characterise South Florida.
The family is now preparing for a significant transition: moving to a larger piece of land to establish a hobby farm. While the four Pekin ducks currently under their care will accompany them, the fate of the local wild ducks remains uncertain. Monica expressed concern for Buddy, the duck who has grown particularly close to Dima, stating they are still deliberating whether it is fair to take him from his natural habitat.
As the Abramovs set off on this new adventure, Monica reflected on the profound impact that their experiences with ducks have had on their family dynamic. Her young sons, especially five-year-old Noah, have developed a deep bond with the animals, often showcasing their love and care for them. The couple’s rural lifestyle, complemented by their previous experiences living near a lake in Canada, has ignited a passion for animal welfare as Monica now volunteers with the Humane Society several times a week.
The family’s story exemplifies the unanticipated joys that come from nurturing animal life. With an expanding online presence, they have discovered a love for storytelling as well, enhancing their connections with a wider audience that cherishes their tales of wildlife. Reflecting on their journey, Monica remarked, “It’s been a complete shift in our lives, and now we’re moving to a future farm, so it’s quite surreal.” The Abramovs’ adventure continues, full of new possibilities and the promise of further enriching connections with the animal world.
