Patrick Duffy has paid tribute to his late co-star Suzanne Somers, recalling their time together on the popular sitcom *Step by Step*. Somers, who passed away on October 15, 2023, just shy of her 77th birthday, was remembered by Duffy in a light-hearted manner that highlighted the camaraderie they shared. Following his tenure on the classic show *Dallas*, Duffy quickly joined *Step by Step*, where he was instantly struck by Somers’ charisma. “I left *Dallas*, and two weeks later, I met Suzanne Somers, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s my new Larry Hagman,’” Duffy remarked, humourously recognising the bond that formed between them.
As the character Frank Lambert, Duffy found himself alongside Somers, who played Carol Lambert, as they blended their distinct families into a chaotic but loving household. The sitcom presented a refreshing take on marriage and parenting, showcasing a couple whose romantic connection continued to thrive despite the challenges posed by raising six children together.

During the panel, Duffy noted that their approach to their characters set them apart from previous family sitcoms. He expressed how both he and Somers aimed to capture a more genuine depiction of married life. “We didn’t want to be like *The Brady Bunch*,” Duffy stated, referencing the iconic show known for its wholesome family dynamic. “We wanted to be a married couple that basically couldn’t keep their hands off each other, except for the fact we had seven kids running around the house.”
Duffy explained that one of his favourite aspects of their performances was the moments spent in their on-screen bedroom. These instances allowed them to explore scenarios that appealed to their own perspectives on marriage. “Quite honestly, we had this conversation regularly; the fun part was that after our scenes, Suzanne and I would often improvise,” he shared. “I would decide to include bits that might not have been in the script. God bless the directors who let the camera keep rolling.”
Their playful interactions did not go unnoticed, as Duffy highlighted how they were able to “play out our fantasies” whilst ensuring that the show remained tasteful and enjoyable. He fondly recalled how these moments reminded them both of the fun they had in their roles and the chemistry they shared, often followed by playful banter about their characters’ relationship.
The underlying theme of their portrayal centred on the belief that life as a committed couple does not end with the arrival of children. According to Duffy, this was an important narrative to convey. “Your life as a vital partner to each other doesn’t end when you start a family; in one sense, it begins. It’s fed like a fire by what you’ve managed to accomplish together,” he explained.
*Step by Step* debuted in 1991 and became known for its relatable storytelling, running for seven successful seasons on ABC and CBS. The subjects of family dynamics, love, and attraction were approached with a blend of comedy and sincerity that resonated with audiences across the country.
Duffy’s heartfelt remembrance of Suzanne Somers serves as a poignant reminder of their impact on the television landscape and the legacy they created together. Their shared experiences and vibrant on-screen relationship remain fondly remembered by fans, as Duffy continues to celebrate the joy and laughter that characterised their time together on the show.
