A teacher from Portland, Oregon, is expressing her heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support from her community as she battles cancer. Niki Taylo, who works at Sunset High School in Beaverton, found herself in a dire situation when her health insurance provider, Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, denied coverage for a vital medication prescribed by her oncologist.

Taylo, a mother of three, was diagnosed with stage 4 endometrial cancer in 2024. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, her health continued to deteriorate, with recent scans revealing mixed results — some tumours shrinking while others were growing and new ones appeared. Faced with these unsettling results, Taylo’s medical team recommended a new treatment option known as ENHERTU, which specifically targets cancer cells. Unfortunately, the treatment comes with a staggering price tag of £63,000 every three weeks.

Initially, the Taylo family attempted to seek financial assistance through the drug company’s support programme, but were told they earned too much for assistance. For Taylo’s husband, Rob, the couple’s financial situation felt increasingly hopeless. “We would be bankrupt very quickly after a few treatments,” he said, highlighting the daunting challenge they faced. With costs mounting, Rob took the step of setting up a GoFundMe page to help cover Niki’s treatment.
To their surprise, within a week, the fundraising campaign surpassed its initial goal. This swift response from the community showcased the impact Niki had made on her students and those around her. “It’s humbling,” she stated, clearly moved by the support. “I don’t know how to say thank you.”
In addition to the GoFundMe effort, a former colleague of Niki’s devised a plan to launch an email campaign aimed at appealing to the insurance company. This initiative galvanised community members, who began sending form letters to Regence in hopes of getting the necessary treatment approved. Following this concerted action, the Taylo family received news that the insurance company was considering a plan to cover Niki’s treatment.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Niki expressed her feelings of disbelief at the circumstances surrounding the healthcare system. “It’s unfair that the world works that way,” she remarked. “That you have to have a wide net of people in order to get care.” Her gratitude has been palpable, as she described the experience of reading the names of those who donated, many of whom were former students from years past.
The funds raised are not only instrumental for the immediate course of treatment but will also assist the family in exploring additional immunotherapy options abroad. “I’m trying to put all the pieces of this puzzle together of these tiny little miracles that dropped into place to make this happen for me,” Niki reflected.
In response to the situation, Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield issued a statement acknowledging the challenges faced by those with serious health conditions. While specifics of Taylo’s case could not be discussed due to privacy concerns, the company emphasised their commitment to providing evidence-based healthcare. They asserted that their clinical policies are guided by scientific research, aiming to ensure their members receive safe and effective treatment.
“We understand how challenging and overwhelming it can be for anyone facing a serious health condition,” the statement read. Regence further affirmed that they strive to support members throughout the claims process, offering personalised assistance to navigate appeals and identify viable care options within their health policies.
As Niki Taylo continues her fight against cancer, the recognition of the kindness and solidarity she has received from her community brings a glimmer of hope amid the hardships. The story serves as a poignant reminder of the broader issues within the healthcare system, exposing the struggles many face to access necessary treatments in the face of soaring costs and insurance challenges.
