In a remarkable turnaround, the former Fort McPherson military base in Atlanta has been repurposed into Tyler Perry Studios, a prominent hub for film and television production. Acquired by filmmaker Tyler Perry in 2015, the 330-acre estate signifies not only a new chapter for the land but also represents a notable achievement in Perry’s career.

Originally opened in 1885, Fort McPherson served as a military installation for over a century, even housing prisoners of war during World War I. However, a federal commission’s recommendation to close the base in 2005 threatened approximately 2,950 civilian jobs, prompting the establishment of the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority. This body was charged with managing the transition of the base into civilian use, ultimately leading to its acquisition by Perry.

The redevelopment plan aimed to convert the expansive 487-acre site into a mixed-use area. Perry’s purchase, completed in June 2015, marked him as the first African American to own a major film studio outright, reinforcing his status as a trailblazer in Hollywood. The acquisition brought with it promise; Perry was committed to revitalising the economic landscape of South Atlanta by generating employment and fostering investment.
Atlanta’s then-Mayor Kasim Reed celebrated the acquisition, emphasising its potential as a catalyst for community development. According to Reed, “The closing of this deal represents the start of a new period of job creation, business expansion and community development in South Atlanta.” This vision aimed to inspire and uplift the neighbourhood, which had been deeply impacted by the closure of the military base.
Production activities at Tyler Perry Studios began even before its grand opening in 2019, with “Boo! A Madea Halloween” being the inaugural film shot on-site. Early projects also included notable productions such as “The Walking Dead” and “First Man,” which showcased the studio’s potential even during construction. Perry’s ambitious project has continued to evolve, with the acquisition of an additional 38 acres, expanding the studio to a total of 368 acres.
The studios are not merely a production space; they encompass elaborate sets and facilities, including a 33-acre historical district featuring 40 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These structures serve dual purposes as both historical landmarks and active shooting locations, offering filmmakers diverse aesthetic choices.
Among the highlights of the studio’s expansive backlot are recreations of significant American locations, such as a replica of the White House and streetscapes resembling New York City. Perry’s vision has led to the creation of intricate settings that include a unique mansion representing various architectural styles, as well as numerous other thematic locations such as a diner, airport terminal, and even a mock jail.
Tyler Perry Studios has become a preferred venue for an array of successful film and television projects, boasting credits that include “Black Panther,” “Coming 2 America,” and the “Miss Universe” competition. The creative space has also hosted popular reality shows like “Family Feud” and “Shark Tank,” showcasing its versatility as a production facility.
Innovatively, the studio is pursuing further advancements, having recently partnered with Synapse Virtual Production to establish a virtual production soundstage. This facility, set to launch by the end of 2026, will broaden the studio’s capabilities and welcome outside productions, driving further growth and collaboration within the industry.
Perry’s vision for the studio extends beyond mere filmmaking. In a past interview, he reflected on the significance of the project, particularly its impact on the community. “The responsibility is huge for anyone who has something like this,” he remarked. He named the central building “The Dream Building” as an embodiment of aspiration, aiming to inspire the local community.
In the words of Perry, the establishment of Tyler Perry Studios represents not just personal success but also a bridge for future generations. As he contemplates his legacy, he states, “Nobody has been given this opportunity, particularly a person of colour, so I have to push harder and further because it isn’t just about me.” His sentiments reflect a commitment to uplifting others and creating pathways for success in the entertainment industry.
Overall, Tyler Perry Studios stands as a beacon of transformation and hope, breathing new life into the former military base and serving as a powerful symbol of change in the heart of Atlanta. Perry’s journey from filmmaker to studio owner encapsulates a narrative of resilience and ambition, one that continues to inspire countless individuals across the nation.
