Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse revealed Jackson’s identity during a press conference on 15th October 2023, utilising advanced forensic genetic genealogy methods to piece together the details of his life and untimely death. Before this identification, Jackson’s remains had been a source of lingering questions and speculation, particularly regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

The barrel containing Jackson’s remains was uncovered by boaters at Hemenway Harbor on 1st May 2022. The recovery was precipitated by a considerable drop in water levels at Lake Mead, which had previously submerged areas of the lake. This discovery reignited curiosity and concern within the community, sparking theories about the potential links between Jackson’s death and organised crime prevalent in Las Vegas during that era.
Despite prevalent speculation, Lt. Robert Price of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that there is currently no evidence connecting Jackson’s murder to organised crime. However, the investigation remains open, acknowledging that this theory has not been completely dismissed. The police intend to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Jackson’s demise, emphasising that the case will remain active until the details surrounding his death are thoroughly unraveled.
In the years following the discovery of the remains, authorities employed innovative techniques to uncover Jackson’s identity. This process involved collaboration with the FBI to generate three facial composites that were then shared with a national missing persons database. Alongside this visual evidence, images of the clothing found with Jackson’s remains also formed part of the investigation efforts.
It was not until 2024 that significant progress was made when a bone sample submitted for genetic profiling facilitated a connection to Jackson’s family. Researchers from Oklahoma State University played a vital role in this identification, confirming Jackson’s identity earlier this year.
Investigators have since uncovered further details about Jackson’s life. Originally hailing from Arkansas, he had family ties to the Hot Springs area and had lived in various states, including California and Utah. Records indicate that he resided with his wife in California during the early 1970s and had a brief criminal history involving aggravated arson and conspiracy to commit fraud in Salt Lake City in the early 1980s. His relatives shared that Jackson often travelled across the country, frequently returning to Arkansas to visit family.
The last known sighting of Jackson by his family occurred in the early 1980s, aligning with the timeline of his suspected murder. Investigators noted that Jackson had apparently not been reported missing, which further complicates the understanding of his circumstances at the time.
While the exact reasons for Jackson’s presence in Las Vegas remain unclear, the new identification has revitalised interest in the case and its unresolved elements. Detectives are committed to uncovering the truth behind Jackson’s death and are keen to establish any potential connections he may have had to the city prior to his murder.
As detectives continue their work, Lt. Price remains resolute. “It will never be closed until we solve it,” he asserted, embodying the determination to seek justice for Edward “Buddy” Lelburian Jackson. As the investigation unfolds, the hope is that this renewed focus will bring new insights into not only Jackson’s life but also the grim circumstances of his passing.
