Gene Simmons, the iconic KISS rock star, took on a heartfelt role over the weekend as he officiated the wedding of Tanner and Maggie Cusumano at a picturesque vineyard in California. The ceremony occurred on 3rd October and was particularly special for Simmons, who has closely followed the couple’s romance and is a long-time family friend of the groom.

Simmons, who has officiated weddings previously, expressed that he immediately agreed to the request to preside over Tanner, 32, and Maggie’s nuptials. “It took about a second to decide,” he said, reflecting on the emotional significance the occasion held for him. Tanner recalled that the musician was visibly moved by the invitation, revealing how meaningful it was to have Simmons take part in their special day.

Interestingly, the ceremony coincided with the anniversary of Simmons and his wife, Shannon Tweed-Simmons, who were celebrating their 15 years of marriage just two days prior. “We hadn’t realised our wedding fell on the weekend of his and Shannon’s anniversary, which made it even more special,” Tanner added, highlighting the unique connection shared during the event. Shannon was also in attendance, supporting her husband during the ceremony.
The couple married at the historic V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena, surrounded by the stunning scenery of Napa Valley. The outdoor ceremony, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, was described by Tanner as an emotional affair that had attendees in tears, especially when Simmons spoke in German—much to the delight of Maggie’s German family.
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” said Tanner, echoing the sentiment of those who were present. Simmons himself described the occasion as “a lifetime memory,” noting the rare joy of witnessing a couple he cares for embark on their life together.
Simmons took the opportunity to provide some marital advice to the newlyweds, humourously urging Tanner to get used to saying phrases like “I’m sorry” and “You’re right.” More seriously, he emphasised that patience and kindness were integral to sustaining a successful marriage, providing wisdom gained from his own years of experience.
The wedding event, attended by around 100 guests, included Tanner’s family from Malibu and Maggie’s relatives from Germany. Notable attendees included documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy and actor Joseph Baena, son of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Simmons remarked on the incredible atmosphere, which featured stunning weather and a spectacular display of drones illuminating the night sky.
In describing the festivities, Simmons noted, “The wedding site was Napa Valley. A large international guest list, including the bride’s family from Germany, and amazing visuals with 300 drones overhead.” The celebratory ambiance was palpable, showcasing the splendour of the vineyard setting where the love story of Tanner and Maggie came to fruition.
Tanner and Maggie’s relationship blossomed in unanticipated ways, with significant geographical distance between them initially. Despite growing up over 5,000 miles apart, the two met at Pepperdine University when Maggie moved to Malibu in 2022 for graduate studies. Their connection deepened swiftly, leading to a proposal during a romantic getaway in Santa Barbara in February 2025.
The Cusumanos’ families have a long-standing connection with Simmons and his wife, forging a friendly bond over the years as neighbours in Malibu. Tanner’s parents, Michael and Caroline Cusumano, have shared many experiences with the Simmons, including helping the couple rescue dogs. Gene acknowledged the close-knit community ties, saying, “We know we can always count on both Mike and Caroline. They have our backs. And we have theirs.”
Through the symbolic union of Tanner and Maggie, the event not only marked their commitment but also celebrated the enduring bonds of friendship and community in a festive vineyard setting, creating cherished memories for all involved.
