LL Cool J has made a much-anticipated return as Special Agent Sam Hanna in the latest spinoff of the NCIS franchise, ‘NCIS: New York,’ which premiered on CBS in October. The renowned actor and rapper, now 58, shared insights into his dedication to performing stunts during a panel at New York Comic Con on 11 October.

During the event, LL Cool J spoke about his personal involvement in the action sequences that characterise the NCIS series. He revealed that he takes on the majority of his stunts, stating he performs about 80 to 90 percent of them himself. While he acknowledged that he occasionally requires a stunt double for particularly challenging scenes, he expressed how integral each stunt is to his portrayal of the character.
The seasoned actor was prompted by a fan to reflect on the most significant stunt he has executed throughout the franchise. His response highlighted his commitment, as he explained that every stunt carries importance for him artistically. He jokingly noted that there are instances, such as when a scene involves a horse, that prompt him to rely on the expertise of long-time stunt performer Brennan Dyson.
LL Cool J’s admiration for the late martial artist Bruce Lee is evident in his approach to stunts. He explained that Lee’s dedication to authenticity and accuracy in his performances resonates deeply with him. “I’m a big fan of Bruce Lee,” he remarked, describing how Lee would go the extra mile to ensure the portrayal was genuine. Inspired by this philosophy, LL Cool J seeks to embody a similar commitment to his role.
Ahead of the show’s release, he spoke to PEOPLE about how he maintains his fitness levels, an essential aspect of playing Sam Hanna. He focuses on consistency in his workout routine and tries to maintain good physical shape. “I cross my fingers and hope it goes right,” he added, suggesting a light-hearted approach to the demands of his character.
With a career spanning 17 years within the NCIS universe, LL Cool J has developed a comfort level with action sequences. He noted that he no longer experiences the anxiety associated with performing adrenaline-pumping scenes. Instead, he finds calm in the process, attributing this to the extensive preparation he invests in his work.
In a poignant reflection on his experience in the series, LL Cool J mentioned how he often shifts his focus away from himself to better connect with his co-stars. He finds it beneficial to consider the experiences of those around him, which in turn helps him unwind after intense filming days.
When asked about the longevity of his role as Sam Hanna, LL Cool J expressed a measured outlook. He commented that he intends to let circumstances dictate how long he continues in this beloved character, emphasising that as long as the role remains fulfilling and enjoyable for both him and the audience, he is keen to continue. He acknowledged how rare it is for actors to find themselves in a situation where they can develop such a character over time.
Overall, LL Cool J’s enthusiasm for ‘NCIS: New York’ reflects his deep appreciation for his craft and the legacy of his character. The show airs weekly on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, promising viewers more engaging mysteries alongside the iconic representation of crime-fighting from the NCIS universe. With his unique blend of talent and dedication, LL Cool J continues to capture the hearts of fans old and new.
