On Thursday, 8th October, NBC’s iconic legal drama ‘Law & Order’ officially kicked off its 26th season, marking its return to television with a new timeslot. The long-serving procedural has shifted from its traditional 8 p.m. ET slot to 10 p.m. ET, now airing after its sister show, ‘Law & Order: SVU’, which also launched its 28th season on the same evening.

The change in schedule comes in light of the network’s programming adjustment to accommodate the reality series ‘The Traitors’. Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal’s president of programme planning strategy, indicated that the compatibility of the two ‘Law & Order’ shows made this decision relatively straightforward. He expressed confidence that the new timeslot would enhance the rating performance during the 10 p.m. hour.
Interestingly, this shift represents the first significant alteration in timeslot since ‘Law & Order’s revival in 2022, allowing the series to find a new life alongside its spinoff. Bader noted, “When you have shows that are as compatible as the two ‘Law & Order’ shows, it’s an easier marketing lift.”
The premiere episode, titled “Ghost in the Machine”, explores a timely and provocative narrative. This episode features the 27th Precinct grappling with a complex case involving the alleged murder of an engineer, with the storyline intertwined with an artificial intelligence system developed by the victim. Vincent Kartheiser from ‘Mad Men’ guest stars as a tech CEO, adding a contemporary element to the series’ long-standing exploration of societal issues.
As well as introducing gripping new plots, the 26th season will bring notable changes to the cast. Reid Scott, who has portrayed Detective Vincent Riley since 2024, is set to exit the series in the upcoming episode on 15th October. Showrunner Rick Eid has promised that this departure will be depicted in an “emotional and powerful” manner, marking a poignant transition in the narrative arc of the series. Following Scott’s departure, James Badge Dale will step in as the new Detective Rob Calvino.
While NBC has yet to confirm the exact number of episodes for the current season, recent seasons have typically spanned between 20 to 22 episodes. Insights from Deadline suggest that this season will also follow suit, with plans for a full production despite some budgetary considerations. Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal television and streaming, reassured fans that there wouldn’t be any major alterations to the procedural format of the show.
For viewers eager to follow the unfolding drama, new episodes of ‘Law & Order’ will continue to air weekly on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET. However, the show may take a break over the holiday period. Upcoming episodes have already been scheduled, with episode titles announced for the following weeks, including “Into the Mystic” on 15th October, “Bad News” on 22nd October, and “Property” on 29th October.
Fans wanting to catch up on prior seasons will find them readily available for streaming on platforms such as Peacock, Hulu, and Netflix. With its rich history and enduring appeal, ‘Law & Order’ continues to stand as a definitive courtroom drama, bringing both justice and thrilling storytelling to audiences each week.
As the season unfolds, viewers can anticipate a blend of challenging legal cases and character development, solidifying the show’s legacy within television history while remaining relevant to contemporary societal issues.
