Chantal Kreviazuk, the Canadian singer-songwriter known for her emotive music, has spoken about her notable experience working with iconic pop star Britney Spears during the recording of the song “If I’m Dancing”. This track, which Kreviazuk co-wrote, was included in the deluxe edition of Spears’ album *Glory*, released in 2016.

The collaboration came to life in a rather personal context, as Kreviazuk recalls having a strong vision for the song. At the time, she had developed a close friendship with Spears, as the pop star was engaged to one of Kreviazuk’s friends. With a sense of excitement, she approached Spears, brimming with passion for the track and a clear idea of how she thought it should sound.
“I remember thinking, ‘Oh, that’s it. This train is leaving the station,’” Kreviazuk reminisces about the moment she envisioned Spears recording the song. She had a specific stylistic direction in mind and suggested to Spears a unique approach, inspired by a famous moment in history, namely Marilyn Monroe’s rendition of “Happy Birthday” for President John F. Kennedy.
Kreviazuk imagined the final product having a “wispy” quality, perfectly capturing the nostalgic essence she sought. Spears, who was then 34, was not only open to this creative input but also graciously engaged in the process. Kreviazuk remembers feeling a thrill as Spears began singing in the style she proposed. However, as the session progressed, Spears expressed a desire to bring her personal touch to the performance.
“I just went, ‘Oh yeah, totally. However you would want it,’” Kreviazuk admits, recalling a moment where she felt apprehensive about asserting her vision against that of the pop icon. What transpired next surprised her; Spears’ interpretation of the song was nothing short of extraordinary. “That’s what we used,” Kreviazuk reflects, acknowledging the immense talent Spears brought to the track, overshadowing her original concept.
Even though Kreviazuk had envisaged a different direction, she embraced Spears’ artistic freedom, understanding that the pop star’s unique vocal prowess was integral to the final product. “She has the voice of an icon,” Kreviazuk stated, reinforcing the idea that artists thrive when allowed to express their individuality fully within a song.
In addition to their professional interaction, Kreviazuk fondly describes Spears as a genuinely kind and professional individual. “I feel really, really lucky and blessed that I got to know the real Britney and I got to see the essence of her,” she expressed, highlighting three key traits she observed in Spears: sweetness, professionalism, and immense talent. Kreviazuk insisted this insight gave her a sense of privilege regarding their collaboration.
Kreviazuk’s artistic journey continues with the release of her latest album, entitled *Rockstar Joy*, which came out in June 2025. The album reflects her ongoing evolution as a musician and her ability to connect with audiences through heartfelt storytelling, a signature element of her work.
Whether through her own songs or in collaborations with other prominent artists, Kreviazuk continues to share her passion for music, allowing her experiences with influential figures like Spears to enrich her understanding of artistry. As her career unfolds, listeners can expect more emotionally resonant music that draws from her rich experiences in the industry.
