A 54-year-old man, Robert Alan Church, was fatally shot in his home near Sweet Home, Oregon, on Saturday, October 10, leading investigators to seek the public’s assistance in identifying a hunter believed to be responsible for the fatal incident.

Church was pronounced dead at the scene after deputies from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call at around 5:48 PM, following reports of a shooting in the 24000 block of Springer Road. Despite the best efforts of deputies and paramedics from the Sweet Home Fire Department to save him, Church succumbed to his injuries shortly after their arrival.

According to preliminary investigations, it is believed that the deadly bullet was fired by a nearby hunter, who had been in the area field dressing a deer at the time. Sheriff Michelle Duncan indicated that investigators are unsure if the hunter was aware that Church had been struck. “At this time, we do not believe the shooting was intentional,” Duncan noted. She urged the individual involved to come forward, emphasising the need to provide answers to Church’s grieving family.
The tragic event has left Church’s family devastated. He is survived by five children, one of whom, Shy Church, described her father as “one of a kind” and shared that he “loved his children more than anything in the world.” In a GoFundMe campaign set up to aid the family in the wake of this sudden loss, Shy expressed the challenges the family now faces.
“His death was sudden, shocking, and impossible for our family to prepare for,” Shy wrote, highlighting the emotional and financial burden they are enduring. The fundraiser aims to cover a range of expenses, including the costs of cremation, moving and storing Church’s belongings, and arranging a celebration of his life. “My grandpa is covering Robert’s cremation, but he cannot afford the many other costs that come with losing someone so suddenly,” she added.
Community members have since been vocal about the need for hunters to exercise caution while in residential areas. Neighbours in the vicinity of the shooting have pointed out that the area is well-frequented by hunters. Many have called for increased awareness regarding safety measures, specifically urging those who hunt to be mindful of their surroundings and the direction in which they are firing.
In a bid to piece together the events surrounding the shooting, investigators are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Springer Road on the evening of October 10 to come forward. They are particularly interested in information from individuals who may have seen parked vehicles along the road, observed anyone with a deer, heard gunshots, or possess any relevant surveillance or trail camera footage.
Authorities have requested that any witnesses or individuals with information contact Detective Derek Klein at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office directly at 541-967-3950.
As the community mourns the loss of Robert Alan Church, the family continues to seek closure and understanding in the wake of this tragic and preventable accident. The sheriff’s office’s investigation remains ongoing as they work diligently to unravel this tragic case and support Church’s family during their time of grief.
