In a significant move to honour its workforce, BJ’s Wholesale Club has announced a reward initiative aimed at recognising over 30,000 of its hourly team members. The initiative, which sees the distribution of gift cards ranging from £200 to £1,600 based on the duration of employment, is part of the retailer’s 40-year celebration.

On Tuesday, October 13, BJ’s Wholesale Club revealed that it would allocate more than $25 million in gift cards to its employees. The values of these cards are determined by each individual’s length of service, reinforcing the company’s commitment to acknowledging loyalty and hard work among its staff.
To unveil these rewards, BJ’s hosted surprise celebrations at various club locations and distribution centres. These events not only served to distribute the gift cards, but also aimed to foster a sense of community and appreciation among employees. Bob Eddy, the Chairman and CEO of BJ’s, expressed the company’s ethos stating, “BJ’s Wholesale Club is driven by a powerful purpose: we take care of the families who depend on us.”
Eddy further elaborated on the significance of the event by emphasising that the company’s success is intrinsically tied to its team members. He said, “They are the foundation of our success, and these awards are a way to thank them for their commitment to our company and our members.”
Founded in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1984, BJ’s Wholesale Club has expanded considerably over the decades. The retailer currently operates 268 clubs and 209 gas stations spread across 22 states, serving a membership base of more than 8.5 million customers. The product offerings include a wide array of food items, household essentials, pet supplies, consumer electronics, and readiness for seasonal demands.
Moreover, BJ’s Wholesale Club has not only grown its footprint but has actively pursued new opportunities to enhance service delivery. In recent years, the company has opened 50 locations, with 13 new clubs added in 2026 alone, and further expansion is planned for the coming year.
Reflecting on the company’s dedication to its workforce, BJ’s previously awarded bonuses to staff in 2021, totalling $8 million. These bonuses consisted of $300 for full-time hourly employees and $150 for those working part-time, showcasing BJ’s ongoing commitment to acknowledging the crucial role of its employees.
As BJ’s Wholesale Club advances into its fifth decade of service, this latest reward initiative not only celebrates its historical journey but also highlights the significance of employee satisfaction. By investing in its workforce, BJ’s sets an example for other retailers to recognise and appreciate the individuals who are integral to operational success.
The overwhelming response to these surprise gift cards reinforces the notion that employee loyalty and morale are pivotal in driving a company’s growth and customer satisfaction. As BJ’s continues to expand both its facilities and offerings, the focus remains on the people who contribute to its ongoing success.
