In the heart of Baltimore, a remarkable initiative is capturing the imaginations of children and families alike. Known as Storybook Maze on social media, Ms. Maze has dedicated herself to the mission of delivering free books to children in underserved communities. Through her enchanting green-and-gold trolley, she aims to make reading not just accessible, but also an exciting adventure.

With a following of over 200,000 on TikTok, Ms. Maze’s work has resonated deeply within the community. Her approach, described as innovative and heartwarming, ensures that children are actively engaged with literature, transforming what some perceive as a chore into a joyful experience. “I feel like my business is really about the magic of reading and how transformative it is to your life,” she shared in an interview with TODAY.com.

The inspiration for this unique initiative came to Ms. Maze one summer’s day in 2024. While reading to her nieces outside her home, neighbourhood children began to gather, enchanted by the stories. However, when she suggested that they could take books home, her heart sank at their response: many simply did not have access to any books. This encounter ignited her passion and prompted her to take reading to the streets every weekend.
Ms. Maze soon recognised a significant issue in her community—the presence of ‘book deserts’, areas where access to literature is scarce. Reflecting on her experiences as a librarian, she noted that the children visiting the libraries were often from different backgrounds than those who congregated outside her home. “My street in Baltimore was one of the worst book deserts,” she admitted. This realisation led her to quit her full-time librarian job during the COVID-19 pandemic and embrace her role as what she terms a ‘radical street librarian’.
Initially, Ms. Maze transported books in the trunk of her car, but the vision for her project quickly expanded. She recognised the importance of presenting reading as an engaging and enjoyable experience. “I have to reintroduce readers to reading in a fun and magical way, and I always wanted to be able to bring the books to them,” she explained. This dream materialised as a book trolley, a vibrant vehicle that invites children into the enchanting world of reading.
Last year, Ms. Maze launched a trial run themed around the Polar Express, which proved to be a hit. Following its success, the full rollout of her trolley took place over the summer, with stops at local parks, football practices, festivals, and back-to-school events. Ms. Maze actively travels through neighbourhoods, reading to children on their stoops and providing them with books to enjoy.
While her collection primarily caters to young readers, she has also witnessed an increasing interest from teenagers and adults. In response to this demand, Ms. Maze is expanding her offerings to include a wider variety of genres, such as graphic novels and thrillers. To sustain her trolley efforts, she has launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising funds for new supplies and eventual plans for further development.
This holiday season, Ms. Maze is excited to reprise the Polar Express experience. The initiative has been a testament to the natural curiosity and eagerness of children, demonstrating that when presented with a fun format, reading can compete effectively with screens and digital distractions. “Kids want to read so much, and you would think that they don’t, especially competing with screens and iPads,” she remarked. “But when we come through and we present it in the way that we do on a trolley, I feel like it’s the hottest thing on the block.”
Looking ahead, Ms. Maze envisions a larger operation, including the possibility of acquiring more trolleys and book vending machines. Her unwavering dedication to fostering a love for reading among children in Baltimore reflects the profound impact that access to literature can have on young lives.
In a city where access to books can often be limited, Storybook Maze is not only opening doors to new worlds but also nurturing a vibrant reading culture that encourages children to dream beyond their immediate surroundings. As her trolley rolls through the streets, it continues to spread the joy of reading, helping to create a brighter future for the community she serves.
