The Rincon Valley Farmers & Artisans Market in Tucson, Arizona, is rallying for community support following an incident where a vehicle crashed through its perimeter, causing extensive damage to facilities. The event unfolded late on Thursday night, leaving the market temporarily closed and staff working diligently to assess the ramifications.

According to Nick Szumowski, the executive director of Heirloom Farmers Markets, which oversees the market, the driver breached the security fence and collided with a barn on property. Fortunately, due to the market’s operating hours—only on Saturday mornings—no injuries were reported, as the premises were vacant at the time of the crash.
Details surrounding the incident reveal that the vehicle first struck the market’s boundary, knocking down two poles that were part of the shade tents. The driver then made a sharp turn at high speed, heading straight for the barn’s western door. The automotive intrusion continued through the interior, where it demolished a custom-designed grill and bench before finally crashing into the eastern doorway. Eventually, the vehicle came to rest inside the barn after suffering two flat tyres.

The driver reportedly fled on foot following the accident and was apprehended later that evening by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. However, further information regarding the circumstances of the arrest has yet to be made publicly available by local authorities.
The resulting damage from the crash was significant, with both garage-style doors and several sliding doors to the internal stalls of the barn being destroyed. Additionally, portions of the cinderblock walls were compromised, leading to a considerable financial burden on the market.
In the wake of the vandalism, the farmers market made a public announcement on social media, indicating its closure on Saturday, 3rd October, owing to the destruction inflicted. In their message, they expressed sadness over the incident, prioritising the safety of their vendors, shoppers, and staff. “We’re sad to share that the Rincon Valley Farmers & Artisans Market was severely vandalised, and we’ll be closed tomorrow,” read the statement.
The impact of the closure has been considerable, affecting 67 local farmers, food producers, and artisans who had planned to sell their goods that weekend. The loss of income and exposure for these local businesses adds to the urgency of the situation.
In response to the event, market staff, alongside community partners like the Rincon Institute, have launched a concerted clean-up and repair effort. Szumowski conveyed his gratitude towards the local community and organisations stepping up to assist them during this challenging period, highlighting the importance of solidarity within the region.
Despite the extensive damage, there is optimism regarding the market’s future. Szumowski indicated plans to reopen on Saturday, 10th October, albeit with some modifications while repairs continue. The market hours will remain from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., ensuring that the local community can once again access fresh produce and artisan products.
Additionally, community members looking to contribute to the recovery can make donations via Heirloom Farmers Markets, which will assist in financing the necessary repairs. Meanwhile, shoppers are encouraged to explore alternative venues in the area, with Heirloom Farmers Markets operating at four other locations throughout the week.
The resilience of the Rincon Valley Farmers & Artisans Market serves as a testament to the strength of community ties in Tucson. As they work through the aftermath of this distressing incident, the support shown by both patrons and local organisations will be integral to their recovery journey.
