The alarm about the fire was raised at approximately 3:15 a.m. on 8 October, prompting the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) to respond. The first fire engine arrived at the scene of the multi-storey commercial building, which was being utilised as a residence, at 3:21 a.m. Firefighters swiftly proceeded to tackle the blaze.

However, in a dire turn of events, at 3:31 a.m., a significant portion of the roof collapsed. This collapse had destructive consequences, leading to further structural failure on the second floor. Authorities recounted that multiple firefighters were working on the roof and inside the building at the time of the collapse, with several individuals trapped beneath the wreckage.

The NCSBI confirmed that one firefighter tragically lost their life in the incident. At present, the individual’s identity has not been disclosed, pending notification of their family. Alongside the loss of life, two additional firefighters sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment, though details regarding their injuries remain unclear at this time.
In the aftermath of this tragic event, Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi urged the community to keep the families of both the deceased and injured firefighters in their thoughts. He reminded the public of the risks involved in firefighting and the sacrifices made by those who serve in this profession. “We just ask that right now, you keep the family and the firefighting community and all the friends and relatives of the deceased and the injured firefighters in your thoughts and prayers,” he stated.
All occupants of the building had safely evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department, and fortunately, no civilians were reported injured. The quick actions of the residents likely contributed to preventing further casualties in what was already a dire situation.
Following the incident, the Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association extended their condolences to the Durham Fire Department. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters of the Durham Fire Department today,” the association expressed, adding, “Local 548 stands with you during this difficult time.”
In response to the tragic events that unfolded, the NCSBI has initiated an investigation into both the cause and origin of the fire, as well as the circumstances surrounding the firefighter’s fatality. An arson team has been assigned to lead the inquiry, providing necessary expertise to better understand the situation and potentially prevent similar incidents in the future.
As investigations are underway, support for the affected families and the firefighting community continues to pour in from across the region. The local authorities are committed to uncovering the details of the fire and ensuring that the sacrifice of the fallen firefighter is honoured.
This devastating incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by firefighters as they valiantly respond to emergencies, putting their lives at risk in the service of others. The community of Durham, as well as the wider firefighting fraternity, will undoubtedly rally together in solidarity during this harrowing time of loss.
