Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis has recently shared her reflections on her journey on the popular television show *Dancing With the Stars*, following her elimination during the “Viral Hits Night” episode, which aired on September 22. In a candid conversation on Maria Menounos’ *Heal Squad* podcast, De Laurentiis opened up about the challenges she faced while rehearsing and performing on the show, including a significant injury that added to her difficulties.

During the episode, the 56-year-old culinary star explained how she struggled with musical counts when rehearsing her routines with professional dance partner Alan Bersten. De Laurentiis mentioned feeling overwhelmed at times due to her inability to grasp the choreography. “There were moments where it really got to me, especially when I was so frustrated with myself because I couldn’t understand a step or didn’t hear the music,” she said.
Upon meeting Bersten, De Laurentiis recalled him asking to listen to music and determine the counts, which proved challenging for her. “A tango has an eight-beat, where a salsa has a three-beat. Like, what?” she reflected, highlighting her confusion and the steep learning curve she faced. The pressure of performing live added to her anxiety, with the clock ticking and expectations high. “I think that fear overwhelms you sometimes,” she noted.

Compounding her challenges, De Laurentiis revealed that she broke her toe within the first week and a half of rehearsals. During a “show and tell” segment alongside other contestants, she accidentally hurt her foot. “I guess I must have put my foot in the wrong spot at the end of the tango and he landed right on my toe,” she explained, detailing the painful experience. The injury has continued to require rehabilitation since then.
Having achieved much success in her culinary career, De Laurentiis admitted the sting of elimination was more pronounced for her. She commented, “Of course, it stings. I’ve had a lot of success, and when you have a lot of success, it can sting even harder.” While accepting that criticism comes with the territory, she expressed disappointment with being scrutinised in a domain where she lacked experience.
Despite her struggles, the chef emphasised her determination to make the most of her performances. “I feel like I did the best I could possibly do with what was allowed,” she stated. De Laurentiis noted that her frustrations were primarily directed at herself, rather than at Bersten, as she endeavoured to make the dance routines click.
Recalling how she approached the show, De Laurentiis revealed that prior to participating, she watched her friend Menounos compete in season 14. With encouragement from Menounos and fellow contestants, she embraced the opportunity to challenge herself. “It is an unbelievable experience, but it’s a lot on your body, so be prepared,” she said, reflecting on the physical toll the competition takes.
In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram following her elimination, De Laurentiis expressed gratitude to her supporters. “I’m honoured to represent women in their 50s and trying something new,” she said. Encouraging others to embrace their fears, she added, “Try something that scares you, because honestly, guys, it is a rush.”
De Laurentiis took the time to commend Bersten for his supportive nature throughout their partnership. “He was such a loving partner, truly,” she praised. “So patient and helped me get really determined. It was really great.”
As the season continues, the celebrity chef’s experience serves as a reminder of the resilience needed when stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Her journey on *Dancing With the Stars* not only showcased her willingness to embrace new challenges but also illuminated the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
