Mikey Madison has garnered significant attention for her portrayal of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen in the upcoming film, *The Social Reckoning*, directed by Aaron Sorkin. The film, which is set to open in cinemas, serves as a contemporary companion to the acclaimed 2010 film, *The Social Network*.

In a recent interview, Madison, who gained fame for her role in *Anora*—for which she won a BAFTA and an Academy Award—described her initial reaction to the script. “I remember reading the script and being very surprised by the character,” she stated. This surprise is attributed to the nuanced nature of Haugen, who famously left Facebook in 2021 after leaking internal documents that showed the company prioritised user engagement over safety and welfare.

Madison noted that taking on such a complex role presented its own set of challenges. “If I have this feeling of, ‘Oh, how am I going to be able to pull this off?’ I think that’s something positive,” she explained, emphasising her desire to stretch her capabilities as an actress. For Madison, being somewhat out of her comfort zone fuels her growth as an artist, providing opportunities to refine her craft.
In her latest role, Madison portrays a character who is grounded in a world dominated by technology. She remarked on Haugen’s personality, saying, “She lives her life behind the screen of a computer, and that’s how she’s most comfortable.” This nuance was a departure from the more exuberant characters she had portrayed in the past. “It felt kind of unorthodox,” Madison continued, acknowledging her previous roles had been more flamboyant, whereas this one required a level of restraint that intrigued her.
The actress found it particularly compelling that the script did not include the typical dramatic outbursts one might expect. “I remember reading the script and kind of waiting, like, ‘Okay, where’s that scene?’ And there wasn’t one,” she laughed, indicating that this restraint was refreshing and stimulating to explore.
Since her exceptional breakthrough in *Anora*, there has been no shortage of offers coming her way. Madison expressed her gratitude for the opportunities that followed her successful awards season. “I’ve been really lucky that I’ve been able to, since *Anora*, be part of exploring really interesting characters and working with filmmakers that I’ve dreamed of,” she remarked, sharing her enthusiasm for the future.
Looking ahead, Madison has several upcoming projects that promise to showcase her versatility. These include an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s work, alongside Léa Seydoux, and a mermaid thriller featuring Kirsten Dunst. “It’s the juxtaposition of these things I love,” she said, highlighting her commitment to telling authentic stories, which she identifies as her primary goal as an actress.
*The Social Reckoning* includes a star-studded cast, featuring Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, and Billy Magnussen. Fans can catch the film in theatres this week, with its release scheduled for 9th October.
Madison’s willingness to embrace challenging roles and explore different aspects of her craft marks her as a compelling figure in contemporary cinema. As she continues to take on complex characters that challenge her skills, audiences can look forward to her contributions to film in the years to come.
