In a candid interview on *The Shawn Ryan Show* podcast, country music star Wynonna Judd has opened up about the challenging relationship she shares with her daughter, Grace Kelley, particularly focusing on Kelley’s ongoing struggles with addiction and legal troubles. Judd, who is 62, expressed the emotional toll of navigating support for her 30-year-old daughter without inadvertently enabling her substance abuse.

Judd revealed her heartache, stating, “I’m waiting for my daughter to return from a nightmarish addiction to meth, and it has been quite a journey.” Grace Kelley, Judd’s daughter with ex-husband Arch Kelley III, is currently serving a 15-month sentence in a Virginia jail after pleading guilty to driving with a suspended licence. This latest incident follows a history of legal issues, including arrests for drug possession and violations of probation.
The country singer reflected on her efforts to support Kelley over the years, explaining that she had sent her daughter to numerous rehabilitation facilities and educational institutions. However, Judd came to a difficult realisation that these actions may have been enabling Kelley’s addiction rather than helping her recover. “I had to let go,” she shared, highlighting the painful choice to cut off financial support, which she described as immensely challenging, as it often meant ignoring pleas for help.
This tumultuous relationship inspired Judd’s new song “Drive” from her latest album, *The Hard Truth*. She hopes to resonate with other parents facing similar predicaments, aiming to articulate the complexity of love and tough love in addiction. “It’s really my hope that I can help someone else… say ‘no’ with love and let go and let God,” she said, underscoring her desire to use her experiences to assist others.
Judd detailed how she recognised that her well-meaning actions, such as purchasing a car for Kelley, may have inadvertently contributed to her daughter’s struggles by providing her with means to access drugs. With the increasing prevalence of dangerous substances such as fentanyl, this revelation became particularly alarming for Judd. “I’m loving her to death, literally,” she admitted, speaking to the weight of her emotions.
The estrangement has not been without its complications, especially regarding Kelley’s own child. Judd is currently caring for Kelley’s four-year-old daughter, Kaliyah, amidst allegations that Kelley would not have been capable of adequately caring for the child due to her addiction. Judd has acknowledged the resentment from Kelley over this situation but remains determined to prioritise the child’s well-being. “My journey is to raise this baby to be the healthiest and break the cycle,” she emphasised, noting the severity of the circumstances involving Kaliyah’s health, which includes type 1 diabetes that requires constant attention.
Throughout the years, Judd has sought various recovery options for Kelley, including wilderness programmes and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, illustrating her commitment to her daughter’s recovery. However, she ultimately recognised that she cannot dictate Kelley’s choices or control her addiction. “I finally get it… all I have control over is myself,” she stated, reflecting on the significant emotional and financial burden she has endured in her efforts to help her daughter.
In earlier interviews, Kelley has alleged that her struggles began with traumatic experiences, including claims of being molested by Judd’s second husband, D.R. Roach. This sensitive subject has added a layer of complexity to their relationship. Although Judd declined to comment on specific accusations regarding her daughter’s past, she made it clear that she wishes for Kelley to find healing and to stop attributing blame.
Recent developments in Kelley’s life included a request for temporary release from jail to give birth, which was ultimately denied. Judd disclosed that she learnt of her daughter’s pregnancy through social media. “I learned about it on TikTok,” she recalled, expressing her shock and heartache at the situation and the addition of another grandchild to her family.
As the situation continues to unfold, Wynonna Judd remains steadfast in her hope for her daughter’s recovery and weighs the balance of supporting Kelley while protecting the next generation. In her own journey, she seeks clarity and peace as she tackles these profound family challenges.
