A St. Cloud family is facing an unimaginable challenge as they navigate the medical journey of three-year-old Serenity Grace Diaz, who has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. This alarming situation emerged when Serenity began displaying unusual facial symptoms, prompting her parents to seek answers for their “sassy little girl,” referred to by her mother, Zaria Greer, as their “princess.”

The family’s ordeal began in May when Serenity’s face became asymmetrical, and she lost movement on one side. Initially diagnosed with Bell’s palsy—a condition characterised by sudden weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles—the family continued to seek clarification as Serenity’s condition did not improve. Concerned about their daughter’s health, they eventually secured a brain scan, which led to her hospitalisation and the distressing diagnosis of a pilocytic astrocytoma.

A pilocytic astrocytoma is a type of benign brain tumour, often associated with a better prognosis if detected early and removed entirely. However, in Serenity’s case, the tumour’s location in her brain stem meant it could not be surgically excised, leaving the family devastated with the news that they were facing an inoperable tumour.
Currently, Serenity is undergoing a six-week course of radiation treatment, which aims to manage the tumour but may not be curative. The uncertainty surrounding her future medical needs poses an additional burden on her family, already grappling with the emotional toll of the situation. Zaria Greer has expressed her fears but remains hopeful for her daughter’s quality of life.
As Serenity’s medical requirements escalated, so too did the strain on the family’s finances. Zaria lost her job while managing her daughter’s extensive care. In light of this, the family has turned to fundraising efforts to support their needs during this challenging time. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched, aimed at rallying community support to alleviate their burdens.
Her father, Joey, has stepped up significantly, juggling responsibilities at home while also providing emotional support for Serenity and her siblings. The pressures of his role, alongside the frustration of watching their daughter endure such a difficult ordeal, are palpable. The couple is determined to remain united, striving to maintain normalcy for all three of their children amidst the distress.
Zaria shared a poignant sentiment in the fundraising appeal; the family’s foremost concern is ensuring that Serenity’s days are filled with love and comfort rather than prolonged hospital visits and medical procedures. She emphasises the need for Serenity to continue enjoying the simple joys of childhood, despite the gravity of her health situation.
“She is only three years old,” Zaria wrote. “Despite everything happening around her, she is still our sweet little girl who deserves to play, laugh, make memories and simply be a kid.” This plea illuminates the human aspect of their struggle, reminding all who read it of the resilience and strength that families draw upon in the face of adversity.
As the Diaz family embarks on this difficult journey, they remain hopeful for Serenity’s recovery. The community’s support, through donations and shared stories, is helping to foster a sense of hope and connection, as they face this unprecedented challenge together. The road ahead may be fraught with uncertainty, but the family’s love for one another remains steadfast and unwavering.
