A tragic incident in Chicago has left a family mourning the loss of seven-year-old Eddimar Paola Hernandez, who was fatally stabbed while walking with her older sister. According to reports, Eddimar was enjoying a midday stroll with her sister when the alleged assailant, 48-year-old Shavon Gayden, approached them. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Gayden had been involved in a confrontation with a staff member at a nearby store before she turned her aggression towards the young girl. As she allegedly stabbed Eddimar in the back multiple times, bystanders rushed to intervene, managing to detain Gayden until police officers arrived on the scene.
Upon their arrival, the Chicago Police apprehended Gayden, who has since been charged with first-degree murder. The police department did not disclose the victim’s name initially but later confirmed that Eddimar had succumbed to her injuries in a statement released on Sunday, 4th October.

Estefany Hernandez, Eddimar’s mother, has called for justice, expressing her heartbreak and frustration over the incident. She stated, “My daughter’s death should not be left like this,” emphasising the need for accountability. Eddimar’s stepfather, Pedro Izqueirdo, remembered the girl as a vibrant child with significant aspirations. “She had big dreams,” he remarked, reflecting on the profound loss felt by her loved ones.
The circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain unclear, with authorities yet to establish a motive. While Gayden was taken into custody, she was hospitalised due to non-life-threatening injuries, which she sustained during the altercation. Initially set to appear in court on Monday, 5th October, for a preliminary hearing, her appearance was postponed due to her hospitalisation. A court date has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 7th October.
Prior to this incident, Gayden had a history of legal troubles, having been arrested five times over the past decade for various charges, including aggravated assault and domestic battery. This pattern of behaviour raises concerns regarding how such cases are managed in the community.

The local community has been deeply affected by the news of Eddimar’s death. Community leaders, including Alderwoman Michelle Harris of the 8th Ward, have expressed their condolences and called for a thorough investigation into the facts surrounding the attack. The sense of unease has heightened as families grapple with safety concerns in their neighbourhoods.
As Eddimar’s family seeks justice, Estefany Hernandez continues to mourn her daughter, insisting, “There must be justice for my little girl. She wasn’t bothering anyone.” The tragic circumstances surrounding her death have ignited broader discussions about violence in the community, parental safety, and the urgent need for preventative measures to protect children.
Investigators continue their work, and further updates from the Chicago Police Department and legal authorities are anticipated as the case unfolds. The heart-wrenching loss of a young life has sparked solidarity among local residents, emphasizing the fundamental right to safety for all, particularly for children.
